People who find one Arcimboldo rarely stop at one. The painter built his composite heads in cycles, and two of those cycles run to four panels each: the Four Seasons<\/strong> and the Four Elements<\/strong>. This piece sets out how the two cycles differ and which sizes actually work for a group on a wall.<\/p>\n

The Four Seasons: a closed set<\/h2>\n

The Seasons are the tighter of the two cycles. Spring<\/a>, Summer<\/a>, Autumn<\/a> and Winter<\/a> carry the same year, 1573, the same original measurement of 76 x 64 cm, the same technique \u2013 oil on canvas \u2013 and the same home, the Louvre in Paris. Four panels, one format, one year: that is why they stand together so quietly as a group.<\/p>\n

All four are profile heads, and all four are built from whatever the season yields \u2013 blossom, fruit, grain and root, dry wood. Hang them side by side and the eye reads four matching silhouettes first and the differences in material second. That order is what makes the row worth looking at.<\/p>\n

The Four Elements: a loose set<\/h2>\n

The Elements are assembled differently. Fire<\/a> and Water<\/a> are both from 1566 and both hang in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, at 67 x 51 cm and 67 x 52 cm almost the same size. Air<\/a> is dated around 1566, measures 75 x 56 cm and is in a private collection in Basel. Earth<\/a> is dated around 1570, measures 70 x 49 cm, is oil on wood rather than canvas, and is in a private collection in Vienna.<\/p>\n

Four panels, then, but four different measurements, two supports and three homes. They still work as a wall group \u2013 just not by way of the original measurements. Here the size you choose from us is what decides it.<\/p>\n

Why they were painted as a cycle<\/h2>\n

Both series are court commissions. In 1562 Arcimboldo accepted an invitation from Emperor Ferdinand I and went to Vienna and Prague, staying in service afterwards under Maximilian II and Rudolf II. The Four Elements were painted in 1566, the surviving version of the Four Seasons in 1573. At court a series like this was not incidental but a programme: four panels that together make a claim \u2013 the ruler orders the seasons as he orders the elements. That is why they are matched so closely in format, and why they still work as a group on a wall.<\/p>\n

Rudolf II later had Arcimboldo paint him as Vertumnus, the Roman god of the seasons, assembled from fruit and grain exactly as the cycles are. After the painter\u2019s death the invention was forgotten, until the Surrealists rediscovered it in the twentieth century.<\/p>\n

Which sizes all four carry<\/h2>\n

A group of four reads as a group when the canvases match. With the Seasons that is easy: all four carry the same eight measurements \u2013 30 x 40, 40 x 50, 50 x 60, 64 x 76, 70 x 80, 80 x 100, 100 x 120 and 120 x 140 cm.<\/p>\n

One of those deserves a line of its own. The original measures 76 x 64 cm as the museum gives it; written upright that is 64 x 76 cm<\/strong> \u2013 and all four Seasons carry it. Anyone who wants the row at the original size chooses that measurement four times.<\/p>\n

With the Elements the overlap is narrower. All four carry 30 x 40 cm<\/strong> and 80 x 110 cm<\/strong>. For a strictly matched four those are the two measurements that work without compromise; anything else gives a row of canvases at differing heights.<\/p>\n

The arithmetic for the wall<\/h2>\n

A line of arithmetic pays for itself before ordering. A row of four canvases of width W with a gap G between them needs 4 x W + 3 x G of wall.<\/p>\n
