The question almost always arrives in the same shape: there is a gap on the dining room wall, and whatever goes there should be neither off-the-shelf decoration nor a gallery pose. An Arcimboldo is built for exactly that spot, and the reason is more ordinary than you would expect.<\/p>\n

The subject is the food itself<\/h2>\n

An Arcimboldo composite head is made of fruit, vegetables, grain, roots and fish. There is no subject that needs less explaining in a kitchen. What hangs on the wall answers what is on the table \u2013 without still-life sweetness, because here the produce is not filling a bowl, it is building a face.<\/p>\n

In a restaurant or wine bar the same subject works as a conversation opener. A guest sees a portrait first, then finds the pear doing duty as a cheek, and the wait has something in it.<\/p>\n
