The Vineyards at Cagnes – two slender olives leaning inward

</colgroup>

The Vineyards at Cagnes is an oil painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, made in 1908. The original measures 55.2 x 46.4 cm, is catalogued as 51.219 and hangs in the Brooklyn Museum, New York. Our hand-painted painting The Vineyards at Cagnes is worked in oil on canvas, in eight sizes from 70 x 60 to 150 x 130 cm.

This is not the same painting as The Farm at Les Collettes, although the place is the same. Cagnes-sur-Mer was Renoir’s home in his last years; this view is above the town, among the vines, and it is painted very freely – the forms are barely fixed and the colour carries everything.

Crowns that join across the top of the canvas

Two slender olive trunks rise at the left and right edges and lean inward, their crowns meeting across the top of the canvas in loose green and ochre. Between them the ground drops away in broken strokes of rose, orange and green to a pale band of sea and a low blue horizon. A small ochre building with a red roof sits at the middle right, and below it a figure in red bends among the vines.

Why hand-painted, not a print

Our version is not a print. The trunks are drawn in a single long pass, while the slope is built from short unblended touches that leave the ground showing through in places. A hand-painted canvas keeps that difference in the way the paint sits, which printed paper cannot imitate.

In the room

The subject is warm, orange and green and takes less light in its stride, so it repays hanging in a living room, a dining room or a kitchen. On a small wall 80 x 70 cm sits well, on a spacious one 120 x 100 cm; on a broad wall 150 x 130 cm works, with 130 x 110 cm in between. Under 70 x 60 cm the crowns above merge and the frame they make disappears, leaving the vineyard without edges.

What you receive

We paint the canvas to order, by hand and for you alone, so every copy is made on its own; the canvas is usually painted and dried within three to four weeks. If you prefer, we will paint it in a size that is not on the list. Before despatch we send you a photograph of the finished canvas for your approval, and only then does the painting go out. The Vineyards at Cagnes arrives stretched on a wooden frame and ready to hang, wrapped in protective film and in rigid packaging, with no further stretching or finishing needed.
