Apples and Grapes is an oil painting reproduction of Monet\u2019s still life of 1880: a scattered group of apples lies on a white cloth, a shallow basket of dark and pale grapes beside them, seen slightly from above. The original measures 82,5 x 66,5 cm, is oil on canvas, and belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago under accession number 1933.1152, shown in Gallery 201. Apples and Grapes \u2013 Claude Monet<\/h2>\n

What is on the canvas?<\/h3>\n

The table is covered with a white cloth that is not smooth: short strokes of white, blue and lilac, the light breaking on them as on crumpled linen. At the left the cloth falls over the table\u2019s rim. Left of centre a group of apples<\/strong>, green and yellow with red flushes, scattered straight onto the cloth. To their right a shallow basket<\/strong> seen from above, its contents in view: blue-black grapes, pale green berries, two or three apples and a few leaves. From under the basket a bunch of pale grapes spills onto the cloth, two berries in front. At the right edge a second group of apples, redder and cut by the edge; one lies at the very bottom. The background is a dark warm brown wall, loosely brushed. Upper left is the inscription \u201cClaude Monet 1880\u201d<\/strong> in reddish brown.<\/p>\n

Why is the view from above?<\/h3>\n

Because Monet did not want the fruit laid out on a shelf. The view is raised just enough for the cloth to become a surface, the fruit spread as on a plan. Nothing stands in front of anything else. The scene is calm and scattered at once: the apples are not arranged but put down. This oil painting is nearer a landscape than a classical still life: colour laid across the surface, shadows short and coloured, not black. The basket is the only thing with depth, and it holds the scene together. <\/p>\n

What does the scene mean?<\/h3>\n

Still lifes are rare in Monet; the record says why they were made. In November 1880 the painter, by his own account book, sold this canvas with two others \u2014 Fleurs, pommes<\/em> and Les Saules<\/em> \u2014 for a thousand francs. Fruit on a table could be painted in winter and indoors, and it sold. This does not diminish the work but places it: an impressionist painting did not only come from the Seine. What Monet brought indoors was the same attention to light, and a white cloth is as heavy a subject as water.<\/p>\n

What does the inscription say?<\/h3>\n

Upper left on the canvas it reads \u201cClaude Monet 1880\u201d. The museum records it expressly, and it shows on the museum\u2019s own reproduction. That matters more than it looks: the year comes neither from a catalogue nor from an inference but from the canvas, so we give it without hedging. Of many works by Monet that cannot be said.<\/p>\n

What does the museum record say?<\/h3>\n

The Art Institute of Chicago lists it as Apples and Grapes<\/em>, oil on canvas, accession 1933.1152. The date is 1880, with no range and no \u201cabout\u201d. It gives the measurements as height by width, 66.5 by 82.5 cm, framed 88 by 103.9 cm; our table puts width first, so we read 82,5 x 66,5 cm. The work is from the Martin A. Ryerson Collection and is on view, the museum says, in Gallery 201. Wikidata gives the same measurements and year \u2014 a confirmation, not a source.<\/p>\n

The work\u2019s journey from Monet to Chicago<\/h3>\n

The museum publishes the whole line of owners and twice writes that it has not confirmed a station: the artist; then possibly<\/em> sold to the dealer Cahuzac in Paris in November 1880, with two other canvases, per Monet\u2019s account book at the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet; then possibly<\/em> Durand-Ruel in Paris around 1883, which its archives could not confirm; Catholina Lambert of Paterson, by 16 May 1895; the same day to Durand-Ruel in New York, carried there as Fruits<\/em>; on 18 December 1915 to Martin A. Ryerson of Chicago for $8,100; and bequeathed to the Art Institute in 1933. We carry both reservations forward and do not count the stations.<\/p>\n

Two canvases with the same title<\/h3>\n

This is the most important thing here. Monet painted two still lifes that both museums now call Apples and Grapes<\/strong>, both of the same moment. Ours is the Chicago one. The other is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a> in New York, number 57.183, 89.5 x 67.6 cm, dated there to 1879\u20131880. The difference is plain at once: the New York canvas shows a deep<\/em> basket from the side, heaped to the brim against a dark olive wall, the cloth falling in heavy folds, the signature upper right without a year. Ours is seen from above, the fruit scattered over a flat cloth, the background brown, the signature upper left and dated. Before buying any Monet reproduction, read the size and the museum alongside the title. The nearest of our own Monet subjects is Still Life with Meat<\/a>, and fruit on the tree instead of the table is in Fruit Trees<\/a>; an interior of the same years is Meditation, Madame Monet on the Sofa<\/a>, and a river scene The Argenteuil Basin<\/a>.<\/p>\n

How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

Each order is brushed in oil onto canvas stretched over a wooden bar, so what you buy is a hand-painted oil painting: nothing printed, nothing prepared in advance. Most of the work is in the cloth. It is not white: blue, grey and lilac lie in it, and if they run together it turns to paper. It is painted in short separated strokes, the shadows under the apples last. The grapes go dark to light, berry by berry, because one stroke turns them into a blot. This family has none of our workshop photographs, so we show none here; the subject waits for the next time. You still receive a photograph of your canvas before dispatch: what you would not approve does not leave the workshop.<\/p>\n

Which size for which wall?<\/h3>\n

Short answer: 70 x 60 cm above a chest of drawers, 90 x 70 cm above a sofa, 150 x 120 cm for a large empty wall. There are eight sizes: 45 x 38 cm and 50 x 40 cm for a kitchen; 60 x 50 cm and 70 x 60 cm above a chest of drawers; 80 x 60 cm and 90 x 70 cm above a dining table or sofa; 120 x 100 cm and 150 x 120 cm in a large dining room or on a high wall. For a still life the smaller size is often the better choice. As a painting for living room walls this subject also sits well in a dining room.<\/p>\n

Custom size, stretcher bar and frame<\/h3>\n

If none of the eight sizes fits, we paint the work in the size you set \u2014 send us the width and the height<\/a> and we will quote price and lead time. A custom size is the only way to get exactly 82,5 to 66,5. The canvas is stretched over a wooden bar and the edges are painted, so it needs no frame to look finished. A warm wooden or gilt moulding carries on the brown background; a cool white frame takes the cloth\u2019s light.<\/p>\n
