A Cart on the Snowy Road at Honfleur \u2013 Claude Monet<\/h2>\n

What is on the canvas?<\/h3>\n

Most of the canvas is the road under snow. It runs from the lower edge towards the middle and narrows towards the trees behind; in its wheel ruts the snow is churned and brown. Elsewhere the snow is not white: grey and bluish in shadow, cream in the light, and broken along its edges by patches of bare earth.<\/p>\n

To the left stands a long low farmhouse, its roof under a thick covering of snow, with two small chimneys; the lower part of the wall is dark and almost without detail, and bare trees rise behind it. In the middle of the road stands a two-wheeled cart, turned away from the viewer, with a dark figure on the bench. The cart is small, barely a few per cent of the width, and it is still the only dark shape in the white, so the eye goes to it first.<\/p>\n

What is written on the canvas?<\/h3>\n

At the lower left, in dark grey-brown, stands the signature \u00bbClaude Monet\u00ab. There is no year beside it. The museum record has no field for inscriptions at all, so the reading is ours: made at full resolution on our own file, which matches byte for byte the plate Wikidata points to. We looked at the lower right corner as well, because \u00bbsigned at the lower left\u00ab is also a claim about the other corner; there is nothing there but snow and one brown rut.<\/p>\n

When was it painted, and why is there a \u00bbvers\u00ab in the answer?<\/h3>\n

The museum writes \u00bbvers 1867\u00ab in its record, that is about 1867. This is not typographic caution but the position of the institution that holds the work: it claims no exact year. Our earlier text wrote 1867 here without a reservation, and that is more than the source allows; this page corrects it.<\/p>\n

Wikidata carries two years for the same canvas at once: 1867 marked circa and 1865 without it, both to the precision of a year. Its own photograph of the work is even filed under a name that reads \u00bb1865 or 1867\u00ab. On this canvas the aggregator therefore contradicts itself, while the museum honestly says it does not know the year exactly.<\/p>\n

So we choose no year here. The page says \u00bbabout 1867\u00ab, and the machine-readable record of the product stays without a year \u2014 better no figure than an invented one. The same museum has a similar case in La Pie<\/a>, RF 1984 164, where the record says \u00bbentre 1868 et 1869\u00ab and Wikidata turns the span into a flat 1868.<\/p>\n

What does the museum record say about the work?<\/h3>\n

The work is held by the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay<\/a> in Paris under accession number RF 2011. It publishes the measurements height first, 65 and 93 cm; our table puts the width first, so here you read 93 x 65 cm. With the frame it gives 78.4 x 107.5 cm, and the technique as oil on canvas.<\/p>\n

How did the canvas reach the museum?<\/h3>\n

The museum gives a single fact: \u00bbLegs comte Isaac de Camondo, 1911\u00ab, the bequest of Count Isaac de Camondo of 1911. That is a mode of acquisition and not a chain of owners, so we write no chapter here about where the canvas had been.<\/p>\n

Which other winter canvases do we sell?<\/h3>\n

Winter is a constant with this painter and not an exception. Among the winter canvases we sell are Snow Effect in V\u00e9theuil<\/a>, where the river bank lies under snow, and Frost<\/a>, where the main thing is not snow at all but hoar frost on the grass.<\/p>\n

Closer to this canvas in subject is Le Pav\u00e9 de Chailly<\/a>: there too a road runs away from the viewer between trees, only without snow. If you want to see how the same device works in summer and in winter, those two are the most direct pair.<\/p>\n

Why does this work matter?<\/h3>\n

Because of the colour of the snow. The snow here is not white: it is cream, grey, bluish in shadow and brown where the wheels have worked it. In the 1860s that was new \u2014 the painter worked outdoors, in winter, in front of the subject, and not in the studio from a sketch. An impressionist painting of this kind shows that the colour of shadows is a matter of observation and not of rule.<\/p>\n

The second thing is the restraint. The canvas tells no story: a cart goes along the road, nobody is hurrying anywhere, nothing happens. On another canvas the same painter put a woman and a boat on the bank, On the Banks of the Seine, Bennecourt<\/a>; here there is neither a recognisable figure nor an event. The road is what is left.<\/p>\n

The third is scale: the cart is tiny and the bank takes up almost a third, so the eye stays near the ground. A Monet reproduction of this kind depends on whether the snow stays varied, not on detail in the cart; how the same painter handles space in summer is shown by Terrace at the Seaside, Sainte-Adresse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Every order is painted individually by an artist, in oil on cotton or linen. That is how every canvas painting leaves us, with no print and no machine step. This oil painting reproduction is demanding precisely in the white: the snow must stay made of several colours, or it becomes one surface, and the depth of the road goes with it.<\/p>\n

The second test is the cart. The only dark shape on the canvas must stay small and soft; if it sharpens, the canvas gains a centre the original does not have. Work of this kind will not take a high gloss, so ours is matt. A hand-painted copy is not a facsimile; two canvases of the same size always differ in the brushwork.<\/p>\n

Which size for which wall?<\/h3>\n

There are eight sizes, from 50 x 40 to 150 x 100 cm. The original has a ratio of 1.4308, and the closest to it is 100 x 70 cm at 1.4286 \u2014 the difference is two thousandths and cannot be seen on a wall.<\/p>\n

By size the closest to the original is 90 x 60 cm, only three centimetres narrower, but by proportion it is much further away, at 1.5000. If you want the shape of the original, take 100 x 70; if you want its size, 90 x 60. For a wider wall 114 x 81 works as well.
