Egon Schiele – Landscape with Houses, 1917

This Egon Schiele work, Landscape with Houses, is our hand-drawn copy in black chalk on paper of a drawing from 1917. The original is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

What the sheet shows

The sheet shows a group of houses along a ridge: a row of low buildings and a larger house with a steep roof, drawn in thin black line with almost no shading. Below them run long horizontal strokes flecked with small vertical ticks, which read as banks and planted ground. The lower half of the sheet is left empty, giving the drawing air and throwing the rooflines forward.

The original’s medium and format

The original is a drawing on paper — the museum records it as “Black chalk on paper” — measuring 45.2 × 29.2 cm (width × height) (inv. 1984.433.302).

Where it is

The drawing is today in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which received it through the Scofield Thayer bequest (inv. 1984.433.302).

Our hand-drawn copy

Our copy is drawn by hand in black chalk on paper, the same medium as the original, and made in the size you choose. Like our paintings, it is made entirely by hand. We send you a photograph of the finished work for approval before it ships.

Frequently asked questions

What does Schiele’s Landscape with Houses show?

A group of houses along a ridge: a row of low buildings and a larger house with a steep roof, drawn in thin black line with almost no shading. Long horizontal strokes flecked with small vertical ticks below them read as banks and planted ground, while the lower half of the sheet is left empty.

When did Schiele draw Landscape with Houses?

In 1917, a year before his death. That year Schiele was assigned to duties at a military supply depot in Vienna, which let him properly resume his work as an artist after a pause of about a year and a half. His drawings from these last years show calmer, smoother contours than his early work.

What technique did Schiele use for Landscape with Houses?

Black chalk on paper, as the Metropolitan Museum records it. The sheet measures 45.2 × 29.2 cm and is wider than it is high, and Schiele built it almost entirely from line, with hardly any shading.

Where is Landscape with Houses today?

In the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, under inventory number 1984.433.302. It came to the museum with the bequest of the American collector Scofield Thayer, who died in 1982.

Who was Scofield Thayer?

Scofield Thayer (1889–1982) was an American editor who ran the literary magazine The Dial in the 1920s. From 1921 he lived in Vienna for more than two years, where he was psychoanalysed by Sigmund Freud and bought works by Klimt, Schiele and other artists. He left his art collection to the Metropolitan Museum, which received it after his death in 1982.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
