On the Points is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky from 1928: on a pale cream ground, a fan of long pointed triangles in red, pink, lilac and yellow opens above three grey bars, crossed by black lines and circles. The original belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne. What can be seen in the painting?<\/h3>\n

The ground is a pale peachy cream, clouded with soft patches of pink, lilac and grey-violet, most densely at the upper left. From a point just above three grey horizontal bars at the bottom, a fan of long, narrow triangles spreads upwards and outwards, their tips pointing down. They are painted in red, crimson, pink, lilac, white, orange and pale yellow, with thin dark outlines. Behind the upper left of the fan lies a large pale lilac circle, partly veiled in brownish grey and edged by a dark violet shadow; two small outlined triangles sit on its left side. At the top an inverted triangle drawn in black lines is crossed by several horizontal black strokes, and a small chequered patch fills its tip. In the upper right corner shines a yellow circle, and below it outlined triangles and a circle overlap in pale yellow and orange. Across the middle of the fan run long black horizontal and slanting lines, together with a black angle and two large circle outlines. On the right a pale triangle stands beside a pair of black diagonals. At the left, apart from everything, floats a pale white circle, and near the base of the fan a small outlined circle. At the lower right, just above the grey bars, sits a small red-orange square.<\/p>\n

A fan of triangles<\/h3>\n

The composition rests on a contradiction that the eye accepts at once: the whole fan of triangles stands on its points, yet it does not feel unstable, because the three grey bars below give it a firm base. From that narrow base the triangles open out like a bouquet, and the eye climbs with them towards the circles and lines at the top. The warm reds and pinks at the centre draw attention first, while the pale lilac circle, the yellow circle and the soft clouds of the ground cool and calm the edges. The straight black lines that cross the fan hold the looser shapes together. Between the reds, white and pale yellow areas light up the fan. On the wall it looks light and airy, yet carefully balanced.<\/p>\n

Kandinsky painted it in 1928. The original is 140 cm high and 140 cm wide and belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne. How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. Which interior suits it?<\/h3>\n

The painting is light in tone, so it suits a modern or minimalist room with white or light grey walls best, where it becomes the one strong accent. It also works in a study; next to a very busy wallpaper it would be lost. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.<\/p>\n
