Colourful Ensemble is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky from 1938: on a pale pinkish ground floats a large grey-green shape filled with a dark field of countless tiny coloured dots, with circles, crescents and curved forms scattered across it. The original belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne. What can be seen in the painting?<\/h3>\n

The ground is pale, a soft pinkish beige, and most of the surface is taken up by one large, irregular grey-green shape with rounded, wavy edges. Inside it spreads a dark blue field strewn with countless tiny dots in white, yellow, pink, green and blue, and many smaller forms float across it. The dark field does not reach the edge of the grey-green shape, so a wide, smooth band surrounds it. At the upper left is a yellow circle, below it a large deep pink circle, and near the top a curved orange and red crescent. Right of centre, towards the top, lies a large pale blue-grey circle, and further right a red shape with a yellow circle inside. In the centre is a round form divided into red, blue, violet and ochre segments around a yellow middle. Below it is a bent pink shape with a small white square. Along the right side lies a beige area dotted with small rings. At the left a curved blue and pink form is crossed by a fine net of lines, and below the centre lies a yellow rectangle. Pointed, leaf-like forms in blue, green and orange curve through the upper half. In the lower half long thin lines and rods in pink, green and grey run diagonally, and a pink circle lies near the bottom. On the grey-green border small clusters of coloured dots glow like tiny stars.<\/p>\n

Small forms in a dark field<\/h3>\n

The composition works like a view into a crowded, glittering world. The calm pale border and the smooth grey-green shape around the dark field give the eye a quiet frame, and inside it everything is busy. The dense dots create a shimmering texture, and the larger circles, crescents and curved forms float on top without any fixed grid. The large pale circle at the upper right and the divided round form in the centre act as anchors, while the smaller shapes lead the eye in loops around them. Because the dark field is narrower below and wider above, the whole group seems to drift gently upward. The colours are soft and many, and the closer you step, the more details appear.<\/p>\n

About the painting<\/h3>\n

Kandinsky painted it in 1938. The original is 116 cm high and 89 cm wide and belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne (inv. no. AM 1976-861). How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. An oil painting reproduction keeps its colours for many years, because oil does not fade the way a print does. The painting is light in tone, so it suits a modern or minimalist room with white or light grey walls best, where it becomes the one strong accent. It also works in a study; next to a very busy wallpaper it would be lost. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.<\/p>\n
