White Sharpness is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky from 1930: on a deep, dark blue ground rises a large pale triangle, with a small pink square at the upper left and two green crescents at the upper right. The original belongs to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. What can be seen in the painting?<\/h3>\n

The ground is a deep, dark blue, almost black, lighter and slightly greenish towards the edges, while a still darker zone surrounds the central forms like a shadow. In the middle rises a large, tall triangle in a pale whitish grey, taking up more than half the height of the canvas; its point is aimed upwards, and its base lies a little below the middle. Its surface is not smooth but finely speckled, so that the pale paint shimmers with tiny grey and pinkish grains. At the upper left, well away from the triangle, is a small pink square, the only warm colour in the painting. At the upper right, in a black patch shaped like a small shield, two crescents float with their tips pointing upwards: a larger pale green one above and a smaller, deeper green one below it. Below the triangle, a little left of the centre, lies a small pale grey rectangle, divided by a diagonal line into two triangles. On its right side a narrow vertical strip of the same grey continues downwards, divided by short crossing lines into small sections, so that the two forms together recall a small flag on a short pole. Apart from these forms, the dark ground is empty, and the deep blue fills most of the surface.<\/p>\n

A triangle against darkness<\/h3>\n

The composition rests on one strong contrast: the pale, sharp triangle against the deep, dark ground. Its point directs the eye upwards, and from there the gaze moves to the two green crescents at the upper right and then across to the small pink square at the upper left, which answers them from the opposite side. The small grey form below the triangle anchors the whole at the bottom, like a base or a signpost. Because there are so few forms, each of them counts, and the large empty areas of blue around them give them room to breathe. On the wall the painting therefore looks calm and concentrated, and its bright triangle stands out clearly even from across the room.<\/p>\n

Kandinsky painted it in 1930. The original is 86.8 cm high and 65.5 cm wide and belongs to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (inv. no. 2685 MK). How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. Which interior suits it?<\/h3>\n

The dark ground gives the painting great strength, so it needs a calm, light wall on which it can really glow. It suits a modern room with white or light grey walls best; next to other dark works on the same wall it would lose its force. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.<\/p>\n
