Slowed Release is a painting by Wassily Kandinsky from 1931: on a dark, mottled grey ground lie flat rectangles, trapezoids and triangles in greens, blues and greys, and at the upper right stand three pale semicircles. The original belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne. What can be seen in the painting?<\/h3>\n

The ground is dark and mottled, a grey-black surface flecked with lighter grey and crossed by faint straight lines. On the left a tall grey-blue rectangle reaches from high up to well below the middle. Near its top are small grey and brown quadrilaterals, lower down dark blue and light blue rectangles and a small pale trapezoid. Right of the tall form, near its top, lies a thin red bar. In the upper middle a large dark green trapezoid, with a small green quadrilateral above it, overlaps a pale yellow-green rectangle, and their overlap is blue. Below the yellow-green rectangle hang a small pinkish brown rectangle, a red square and a narrow pale grey strip. At the upper right three overlapping pale grey semicircles stand in a row. At the lower left a long dark blue triangle leans to the left, its lower tip resting on a long pale lilac band. On the band stand a tiny light blue triangle and a curved pink form like a horn, with an upright dark green rectangle at its right end. Right of centre, lower down, a narrow black triangle points down towards two thin white lines. Further right are a short red bar, a dark blue triangle and a circle halved into light blue and brown.<\/p>\n

Clear forms on a dark ground<\/h3>\n

The composition rests on the contrast between the dark, grainy ground and the flat, clear forms laid over it. The larger forms gather in the upper half, while the lower half stays more open, with smaller forms spread at wide intervals. The tall grey-blue rectangle on the left and the semicircles on the right frame the large green planes in the middle. The colours are muted, greens, blues and greys, and only a few small red accents and pale forms light up against the dark. The eye moves from the large planes at the top down to the band at the lower left and then across to the divided circle on the right. On the wall the painting looks calm and quiet, and its small details reveal themselves slowly.<\/p>\n

Kandinsky painted it in 1931. The original is 59.8 cm high and 69.5 cm wide and belongs to the Mus\u00e9e National d\u2019Art Moderne (inv. no. AM 81-65-63). How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

The painter works from a high-resolution reference and builds the painting up in layers, with brush and oil paint. First the arrangement of the main forms is sketched in thin paint, then the colours go on layer by layer, from the large areas down to the smallest details. The edges of the forms and the transitions between colours are compared with the reference until the proportions match. An oil painting reproduction keeps its colours for many years, because oil does not fade the way a print does. Since every reproduction is made individually, no two copies match down to the last detail; the subject, the proportions and the colours do. Which interior suits it?<\/h3>\n

The dark ground gives the painting great strength, so it needs a calm, light wall on which it can really glow. It suits a modern room with white or light grey walls best; next to other dark works on the same wall it would lose its force. Hang it with its centre at about eye level, roughly 150 cm from the floor; above a sofa or sideboard, leave a gap of 20 to 30 cm. In a bedroom a medium size above the bed works well, and in a hallway or on a narrow wall a smaller size hung at eye level.<\/p>\n
