The Dancer is one of Gustav Klimt\u2019s last large paintings, from 1916\u201317: a slender woman with black bobbed hair stands in a flowered kimono before a wall of red, pink and white flowers, with a round orange table and a bouquet beside her. The lower third was never finished, so Klimt\u2019s drawing still shows through. The original is in a private collection and has been shown at the Neue Galerie in New York. The Dancer \u2013 Gustav Klimt<\/h2>\n

What does the painting show?<\/h3>\n

A slender young woman stands upright in the tall, narrow format and looks out at us. Her black hair is cut in a short bob, her face is pale, and a flowered kimono is wrapped around her body, leaving her breasts bare. On the right stands a round orange table with a large bouquet of flowers.<\/p>\n

Behind her rises a wall of red, pink and white flowers, almost like a mosaic, and at the very top small figures in an Asian style appear in the ornament. At the lower left a cloth with a black-and-white zigzag pattern catches the eye. Towards the bottom the colours grow thinner and sketchier: this is the part of the canvas that Klimt never finished.<\/p>\n

Who is the woman in The Dancer?<\/h3>\n

Nobody can say for certain. In 1912 the Viennese businessman Alexander Munk and his wife Aranka commissioned Klimt to paint a posthumous portrait of their daughter Ria, who had taken her own life. It is believed that this canvas began as that portrait and later became a different painting.<\/p>\n

That is why the work is known simply as The Dancer and not by a name. For a buyer it changes little: the painting is loved for its colour, its pattern and the calm, self-assured figure, not for the identity of the sitter. Knowing the story, however, many people find it moving that such a joyful painting may have grown out of a sad commission.<\/p>\n

Why is The Dancer unfinished?<\/h3>\n

Klimt died in February 1918, and several of his last canvases remained in his studio unfinished. On The Dancer the lower third is incomplete: the Neue Galerie notes that his preliminary drawing is still partly visible there. You can see how he worked, drawing first and then building up colour and ornament from the top down.<\/p>\n

Far from spoiling the painting, the unfinished part makes it lighter and more modern. Our copy follows the original as it is, including the paler, sketchier lower part, so you get the painting Klimt left behind rather than an invented ending.<\/p>\n

Where is the original?<\/h3>\n

The original, 180 x 90 cm, oil on canvas, is in a private collection and has been shown at the Neue Galerie in New York, the museum for Austrian and German art on Fifth Avenue. It also has a special place in history: it was the first Klimt painting to travel to the United States, shown in 1922 at the New York branch of the Wiener Werkst\u00e4tte, also on Fifth Avenue.<\/p>\n

The Dancer among Klimt\u2019s portraits of women<\/h3>\n

The Dancer shows Klimt at the end of his life, when gold had given way to colour and flowers. Choose The Dancer if you love strong colour and pattern in a tall format: it is one of Klimt\u2019s most cheerful late works and fills a narrow wall with flowers. If you prefer a quieter, more formal portrait, Adele Bloch-Bauer II or Sonja Knips will suit you better.<\/p>\n

How do we paint The Dancer by hand?<\/h3>\n

The painter first draws the figure, the table and the main lines of the flowered wall, so that the tall proportions are right. Then the background flowers are built up in many small dabs of red, pink and white, followed by the patterns of the kimono, the orange table and the bouquet. The face and hair come last, painted precisely against the busy ornament.<\/p>\n

The lower part is painted lighter and looser, as on the original, so that the unfinished zone keeps its open, sketchy character. A printed oil painting reproduction turns the many layers of flowers into a flat surface; by hand, every flower has its own stroke. Every painting is a hand-painted copy made for your order, so no two are ever quite the same.<\/p>\n

There is no gold in this work, so we paint it in oil colours only, as Klimt did.<\/p>\n

Which size for which wall?<\/h3>\n

Short answer: 60 x 120 cm for a narrow wall, between two windows or in a hallway, 70 x 140 cm or 80 x 160 cm for a tall wall in a living room or bedroom, and 50 x 100 cm for a smaller space. The original is 180 cm high, so even our largest size is a little smaller than the real painting.<\/p>\n

There are four tall sizes: 50 x 100, 60 x 120, 70 x 140 and 80 x 160 cm, width first. All of them keep the original\u2019s proportion of one to two, so the figure is never squeezed or stretched. A tall painting does not go above a sofa like a wide one; it works best on its own, on a narrow wall, beside a cupboard or at the end of a hallway. As a painting for the living room, choose 70 x 140 cm or more so that the figure reads from across the room.<\/p>\n

Hang it with the centre of the canvas about 150 to 160 cm above the floor; a tall canvas often looks best when its lower edge sits 40 to 60 cm above the floor or furniture.<\/p>\n
