[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Pear Tree is one of Gustav Klimt’s square landscapes, painted in 1903 and reworked by the artist in later years: a huge treetop fills almost the whole canvas with dense dabs of green, blue and violet, scattered with small yellow and white dots, above a row of trunks and a strip of bright green meadow. Klimt gave it to Emilie Flöge, and the original is now in the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard. We paint it by hand in oil on canvas, in eight square sizes from 60 x 60 to 150 x 150 cm or to your own measurement, and send you a photograph of the finished work for approval before dispatch.

</colgroup>

Pear Tree – Gustav Klimt

What does the painting show?

A single great treetop fills almost the whole square. It is built from countless small dabs of colour – deep green, blue and violet – laid side by side like stitches in a tapestry, and among them sit small yellow and white dots that read as pears or blossom catching the light. Only at the top left does a small patch of pale sky break through the leaves.

At the bottom the tree comes down to earth: a row of trunks stands in a line, and below them runs a narrow strip of bright green meadow. There are no people, no house and no path, only the tree, the light and the grass. The result is a calm, almost meditative painting that you can look into for a long time and keep finding new shades.

A painting for Emilie Flöge

Klimt spent his summers at Lake Attersee in Upper Austria with the family of Emilie Flöge, his lifelong companion, and many of his landscapes began there. Pear Tree was probably started at the lake and finished in Vienna for an exhibition that same year, 1903. Klimt then gave it to Emilie Flöge.

Even after it was hers, he did not stop working on it: in the following years he went back to the canvas and filled in bare spots, so the painting we see today grew over a long time. For a buyer that is a lovely detail – this is not a quick sketch from nature but a work he cared about enough to keep improving, made as a gift for Emilie.

Why does the treetop fill the whole square?

Because Klimt wanted you to stand right in front of the tree rather than look at a view. For his landscapes he usually chose a square canvas and moved in close, cutting away the horizon and most of the sky, so that leaves, flowers or water spread across the surface like a patterned fabric. In Pear Tree the crown takes almost all of the space, and the small patch of sky and the meadow strip are just enough to tell you where up and down are.

The effect is close to the decorative surfaces of his portraits, but made from nature instead of gold. The dabs of green, blue and violet shimmer, the yellow and white dots sparkle, and from a few steps away the whole canvas seems to move gently, like leaves in a light wind. That is why the painting works so well in a quiet room: it brings in a piece of summer garden without any busy detail.

Where is the original?

The original, painted in oil and casein on canvas and about 101 cm square, is in the Busch-Reisinger Museum, part of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, under the number BR66.4. It came to Harvard as a gift from Otto Kallir. It is dated 1903, with later reworking by the artist, which matches what we know of Klimt adding to it after he had given it away. More about the painting is on English Wikipedia.

If you are planning a visit to Boston, check the museum’s website first, because works are not always on display. Our version is not a print: it is painted for you, by hand, in the size you choose.

Pear Tree among Klimt’s landscapes

In our gallery you can set Pear Tree beside the other fruit trees Klimt painted. Apple Tree I and Apple Tree II show apple trees full of fruit on the same kind of square canvas; Poppy Field is a bright summer meadow full of red poppies with trees above; and Emilie Flöge is Klimt’s portrait of the woman who received this painting as a gift.

Pear Tree is the densest of these landscapes and the coolest in tone, with blue and violet among the greens. Choose it if you want a calm, deep field of colour; if you prefer warmer reds and a lighter mood, Poppy Field may suit you better. More about Klimt’s life is on Wikipedia’s Klimt page.

How do we paint Pear Tree by hand?

The painter first marks the line of trunks, the edge of the meadow and the outline of the crown, so that the tree sits at the same height in the square as in the original. Then the large colour masses of the treetop go on in thin layers of green, blue and violet, followed by the patch of pale sky at the top left.

After that comes the slow part: the small dabs, one beside another, until the crown has the same dense, woven texture as Klimt’s, and finally the yellow and white dots that make it sparkle. A printed oil painting reproduction flattens all of those touches into one smooth surface; painted by hand, each dab keeps its own body and catches the light. Every painting is a hand-painted copy made for your order, so no two are quite alike.

Klimt painted the original in oil and casein; ours is painted entirely in oil, which keeps the colours deep and lasting. There is no gold in this landscape, and none in our version.

Which size for which wall?

In short: 60 x 60 or 70 x 70 cm for a small wall, a hallway or a kitchen; 80 x 80 or 90 x 90 cm above a chest of drawers or in a bedroom; 100 x 100 or 110 x 110 cm above a sofa; and 120 x 120 or 150 x 150 cm for a large wall or an open-plan room. The 100 x 100 cm size is about as big as the original.

All eight sizes are square, just like Klimt’s canvas, so nothing is cropped. A landscape like this works best where you can see the whole crown at once, and it keeps its effect even when small, because the colour does the work. A painting this calm is easy to live with above a bed; as a painting for the living room, 110 x 110 cm gives the tree real presence above a three-seat sofa. In a long corridor, two smaller Klimt landscapes side by side also look good.

Hang it with the centre of the canvas about 150 to 160 cm above the floor; over furniture, leave 20 to 30 cm between the top of the furniture and the lower edge of the canvas. As a rule of thumb, a painting above a sofa looks best at about two thirds of the sofa’s width.

Custom size, stretcher and frame

If none of the eight sizes fits your wall, we paint it to measure; keep it square, or close to square, so the crown is not stretched. Send us the width and height you want and we will quote the price and delivery time. Every painting we make is stretched on a wooden stretcher frame and ready to hang.

For the moulding, use our 3D application: it shows every one of our frame profiles on this subject, so you can compare gold, silver, black, white and natural wood before deciding – the application is for choosing the frame only. If you would like to see how the painting will look on your own wall, that is our separate room placement service. A natural wood or narrow gold frame suits the summer greens; a thin black frame makes the blue and violet look deeper.

Delivery and guarantee

Every painting is made to order in our studio in Slovenia, so allow 15 to 45 days depending on the size you choose. We ship it stretched and protected for transport, framed if you chose a frame, across the EU with no customs. Before dispatch you receive a photograph of the finished work to approve; if anything is not right, we correct it while the canvas is still in our workshop. Our returns policy applies to every order.

If it is a gift and you are not sure of the size, there is our gift voucher. More of Klimt’s work is in our Gustav Klimt gallery, and more about the painter in our article 10 interesting facts about Gustav Klimt.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the original Pear Tree by Klimt?

The original is in the Busch-Reisinger Museum, part of the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it carries the number BR66.4. It is painted in oil and casein on canvas and measures about 101 cm square. If you plan a visit, check the museum’s website first, because not every painting is on view every day.

When did Klimt paint Pear Tree?

Klimt painted Pear Tree in 1903. It was probably begun in summer at Lake Attersee and finished in Vienna for an exhibition later that year. He then went on reworking it in the following years, filling in bare spots, so the date is usually given as 1903 with later reworking by the artist.

Did Klimt give Pear Tree to Emilie Flöge?

Yes. Klimt gave the painting to Emilie Flöge, his lifelong companion, in 1903. Even so, he kept coming back to the canvas in the following years and filled in bare spots, so the painting kept growing after it was hers. It later came to Harvard as a gift from Otto Kallir and is now in the Busch-Reisinger Museum.

What does Klimt’s Pear Tree show?

It shows one huge treetop that fills almost the whole square, made of dense dabs of green, blue and violet with small yellow and white dots that read as pears or blossom. A patch of pale sky shows at the top left, and at the bottom a row of trunks stands on a strip of bright green meadow.

What technique is Pear Tree painted in?

Klimt painted the original in oil and casein on canvas. Casein is a paint bound with milk protein that dries quickly and looks matt. We paint our version entirely in oil on canvas, which gives the same dense, layered surface of small dabs and keeps the green, blue and violet deep and lasting. Every stroke is done by hand.

Is there gold in Pear Tree?

No, there is no gold in this landscape. Like Klimt’s other landscapes it is painted in natural colours – green, blue, violet, yellow, white and a pale sky – and the shimmer comes from the small dabs and dots, not from metal leaf. That is why we paint our version in oil colours only, without gold paint, just as the original looks.

Which size of Pear Tree suits my wall?

For a small wall, a hallway or a kitchen, 60 x 60 or 70 x 70 cm works well. Above a chest of drawers or a bed choose 80 x 80 or 90 x 90 cm, above a sofa 100 x 100 or 110 x 110 cm, and for a large wall 120 x 120 or 150 x 150 cm. The 100 x 100 cm size is about as big as the original.

Which room suits Pear Tree?

It suits a living room, a bedroom, a dining room or a study – anywhere you want calm, natural colour and a feeling of summer. As a canvas painting it brings a garden indoors and pairs well with white, grey or sage-green walls, light wood and linen. It also works in a room with little daylight, where the greens make the space feel fresher.

Is Pear Tree a good gift?

Yes – Klimt himself gave this painting as a gift, to Emilie Flöge. It suits anyone who loves gardens, nature or Klimt’s quieter side beyond the famous gold, and its square format fits almost any wall. If you are not sure of the size, choose 80 x 80 cm, which fits most homes, or give a voucher so the recipient can choose.
