[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Forest Floor is a small oil sketch that Gustav Klimt painted around 1881/82, before he turned twenty: a patch of woodland ground on a slope, with dark earth, moss, twigs and rotting leaves, a band of warm light across the middle and deep shadow above. The original measures only 10 x 8 cm and is kept at the Leopold Museum in Vienna. We paint it by hand in oil on canvas as an enlargement, in seven upright sizes from 50 x 60 to 120 x 150 cm or to your own measurement, and send you a photograph of the finished work for approval before dispatch.

</colgroup>

Forest Floor – Gustav Klimt

What does the painting show?

Forest Floor shows a small piece of woodland ground, seen close up. A slope runs diagonally from the lower left towards the upper right, covered with dark brown earth, moss, fallen twigs and rotting leaves. Across the middle a band of light picks out orange-brown leaves and a few green plants, and at the bottom a tuft of pale grass catches the brightness. On the right, thin branches cross the scene, and at the top everything sinks into deep shadow.

There is no sky, no path and no figure – only the ground of the forest, painted with open, loose strokes of brown and green. It is the kind of place you pass on a walk without looking twice, and Klimt turns it into a small study of light and shade, warm and quiet, with the smell of damp earth almost in the air.

How small is the original?

Very small: the original measures 10 x 8 cm, about the size of a postcard cut in half, and the whole painted surface is around 80 square centimetres. It is an oil sketch, made quickly and directly, and yet the upright format is carefully arranged, with the light falling from the upper left and the slope leading the eye across the panel of canvas.

This is why every size we offer is an enlargement. A sketch this small becomes something new when it is painted large: the loose dabs and strokes, which in the original are only a few millimetres long, turn into broad, visible brushwork that you can follow across the canvas. We tell you this openly, so that you know exactly what you are ordering – Klimt’s composition, painted by hand at a size the original never had.

What does it tell us about the young Klimt?

Forest Floor belongs to a small series of landscape studies that Klimt painted around 1881/82, when he was not yet twenty. According to the Leopold Museum, these works are considered his first attempts at landscape, painted in the academic tradition he was trained in. Long before the gold of The Kiss and the square summer landscapes of his later years, he was learning here how to look at nature and how to place light.

The museum points out that the light from the upper left recalls the chiaroscuro of Baroque painting – the strong contrast of light and dark that gives depth and drama to a small scene. In Forest Floor that contrast does all the work: a glowing strip of leaves in the middle, deep brown shadow above and around it. It is a modest subject, handled with real skill, and it shows the young painter at the very start of his road.

Where is the original?

The original hangs in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, as a permanent loan from the Klimt Foundation; the museum dates it to about 1881/82 and describes it as an oil sketch on canvas, 10 x 8 cm. Because it is so small, it is easy to miss in a gallery room, and close up you see how freely the young Klimt handled the brush.

If you are in Vienna, check the museum’s website before you go, because works are sometimes moved or lent to exhibitions. For your own wall, a hand-painted version is the way to have this woodland study at a size you can enjoy from across the room.

Forest Floor among Klimt’s works

In our gallery Forest Floor has relatives from very different moments of Klimt’s life. Forest of Beech Trees and Pine Forest II show how he returned to the forest twenty years later, in square formats and with dense patterns of trunks. Young Birches is a meadow with white birches from 1900, and Idyll is another early work, from the years of his academic training.

Choose Forest Floor if you like warm earth colours, a close, intimate view of nature and the loose touch of a sketch; if you prefer a larger forest with tall trunks, the beech or pine forest suits you better, and if you want light and summer, the birches. More about Klimt’s life is on Wikipedia’s Klimt page.

How do we paint Forest Floor by hand?

Because the original is so small, the painter first transfers its proportions to the large canvas with a grid, so that the diagonal of the slope, the band of light and the branches on the right sit exactly where Klimt placed them. Then the dark ground goes on in thin layers of brown, umber and olive, followed by the warmer middle tones where the light falls.

After that comes the part that makes an enlargement come alive: the leaves, the moss, the twigs and the tuft of grass are painted with open, loose strokes, scaled up to the new size, so that the brushwork stays as free as in the sketch. A printed oil painting reproduction would turn a tiny sketch into a blurred, flat surface; painted by hand, each stroke has its own body and catches the light. Every painting is a hand-painted copy made for your order, so no two are quite alike.

There is no gold in this study, and none in our version: we use oil colours only, as Klimt did.

Which size for which wall?

In short: 50 x 60 or 63 x 79 cm for a small wall, a hallway or a study; 70 x 90 or 80 x 100 cm above a chest of drawers, a desk or a bed; 90 x 110 or 100 x 125 cm above a sofa; and 120 x 150 cm for a large wall or a high room. The 80 x 100 cm size has exactly the 4:5 proportion of the original.

All seven sizes are upright, like Klimt’s sketch, and all of them are enlargements of a 10 x 8 cm original, so the brushwork becomes bolder as the size grows. At 50 x 60 cm the painting stays close and intimate; from 90 x 110 cm up the forest floor almost becomes a window into the woods. As a painting for the living room, 100 x 125 cm next to a bookcase or above a sofa gives the warm browns real presence. In a study or a bedroom its earthy colours create a calm, grounded mood.

Hang it with the centre of the canvas about 150 to 160 cm above the floor; over furniture, leave 20 to 30 cm between the top of the furniture and the lower edge of the canvas. Because the painting is dark, it looks best with light from the side or a small lamp above it, which brings out the glowing band of leaves.

Custom size, stretcher and frame

If none of the seven sizes fits your wall, we paint it to measure; keep the upright 4:5 proportion, or close to it, so the slope and the light stay where Klimt put them. Send us the width and height you want and we will quote the price and delivery time. Every painting we make is stretched on a wooden stretcher frame and ready to hang.

For the moulding, use our 3D application: it shows every one of our frame profiles on this subject, so you can compare gold, silver, black, white and natural wood before deciding – the application is for choosing the frame only. If you would like to see how the painting will look on your own wall, that is our separate room placement service. A dark wood or old-gold frame suits the earthy browns and the nineteenth-century character of the sketch; a thin black frame gives it a more modern look.

Delivery and guarantee

Every painting is made to order in our studio in Slovenia, so allow 15 to 45 days depending on the size you choose. We ship it stretched and protected for transport, framed if you chose a frame, across the EU with no customs. Before dispatch you receive a photograph of the finished work to approve; if anything is not right, we correct it while the canvas is still in our workshop. Our returns policy applies to every order.

If it is a gift and you are not sure of the size, there is our gift voucher. More of Klimt’s work is in our Gustav Klimt gallery, and more about the painter in our article 10 interesting facts about Gustav Klimt.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the original Forest Floor by Klimt?

The original is in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, on permanent loan from the Klimt Foundation. It is a small oil sketch on canvas, dated to about 1881/82, when Klimt was not yet twenty. Because works are sometimes moved or lent, check the museum’s website before you visit. Our versions are hand-painted enlargements of it.

How big is Klimt’s Forest Floor?

The original is tiny: only 10 cm high and 8 cm wide, an oil sketch of about 80 square centimetres. That is why all our sizes, from 50 x 60 to 120 x 150 cm, are enlargements painted by hand. The 80 x 100 cm size keeps exactly the 4:5 proportion of Klimt’s small canvas.

When did Klimt paint Forest Floor?

Klimt painted it around 1881/82, when he was not yet twenty. It belongs to a small series of landscape studies in the academic tradition, which the Leopold Museum describes as his first attempts at landscape. It comes long before his golden period and the square landscapes of his Attersee summers.

What does Klimt’s Forest Floor show?

It shows a close view of woodland ground on a slope running diagonally to the upper right: dark earth, moss, twigs and rotting leaves in open strokes of brown and green. A band of light picks out orange-brown leaves and green plants in the middle, pale grass glows at the bottom, and deep shadow fills the top.

Can Forest Floor be painted in a large size?

Yes. Because the original is only 10 x 8 cm, every size we offer is an enlargement, painted by hand from Klimt’s composition. The loose strokes of the sketch are scaled up, so the brushwork becomes broad and visible. We say this openly, so that you know you are getting Klimt’s study at a size the original never had.

Is there gold in Forest Floor?

No, there is no gold in this early study. It is painted in earthy natural colours – browns, umbers, olive and green, with warm orange in the band of light – and its glow comes from the contrast of light and shadow, not from metal leaf. We therefore paint our version in oil colours only, without gold paint.

Which size of Forest Floor suits my wall?

For a small wall, a hallway or a study, 50 x 60 or 63 x 79 cm works well. Above a chest of drawers, a desk or a bed choose 70 x 90 or 80 x 100 cm, above a sofa 90 x 110 or 100 x 125 cm, and for a large wall 120 x 150 cm. The 80 x 100 cm size has the proportion of the original.

Which room suits Forest Floor?

It suits a study, a library, a bedroom, a hallway or a living room with warm wood – anywhere you want a calm, earthy touch of nature. As a canvas painting it pairs well with natural wood, linen, leather and dark green or ochre walls. Because its colours are deep, give it some light from the side so the band of leaves glows.

Is Forest Floor a good gift?

Yes, especially for someone who loves forests, walks in the woods or the early, less known side of Klimt. The story of a 10 x 8 cm sketch by the young painter makes it a gift with something to tell. If you are not sure of the size, choose 80 x 100 cm, which keeps the original proportion, or give a voucher so the recipient can choose.
