[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The Cardsharps is a painting Caravaggio made around 1596–1597: at a table with a backgammon board on it, a well-dressed young man in black studies his cards, while opposite him a young cheat in a striped yellow-and-black doublet reaches behind his back for the extra cards tucked into his belt, and an older accomplice in torn gloves peers over the victim’s shoulder and signals. The original, oil on canvas, is 94.2 cm high and 130.9 cm wide and belongs to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. Our painter paints it for you by hand in oil on canvas in 8 landscape sizes, from 56 x 40 to 200 x 148 cm, or to your own measurements, and we send you a photograph of the finished painting before it ships.

</colgroup>

The Cardsharps – Caravaggio

What does The Cardsharps show?

Two young men sit at a table playing cards, and behind one of them stands a third, older man. On the left is a boy in expensive black clothes, completely absorbed in the cards in his hands.

Facing him sits a second boy in a doublet striped yellow and black. One hand reaches behind his back, where extra cards are tucked into his belt: his opponent cannot see them, but the viewer sees them at once. A dagger hangs at his side.

The older man leans over the victim’s shoulder and peeks at his cards. With fingers poking out of his torn gloves, he signals to the younger accomplice what the other player is holding.

What is really happening at the table?

Caravaggio shows the swindle while it is under way. The two tricksters work as a team: one reads the cards over the shoulder, the other waits for the signal with a card ready behind his back.

Wikipedia points out a detail that makes the story less simple. The young cheat is no older than the boy he is fleecing. He too is still an innocent, only someone is already teaching him to cheat, and his anxious glance at the older man gives away that he is new to the trade.

That is why the painting does not preach. It shows three people, each playing a part, and leaves the verdict to the viewer.

Why is The Cardsharps so famous?

Because it marks a turning point in Caravaggio’s life. He painted it after leaving the workshop of the Cavaliere d’Arpino, where he had mostly painted flowers and fruit, to set out on his own. The picture caught the eye of Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, who bought it and became the painter’s first important patron.

Earlier, Caravaggio had painted The Fortune Teller, the first work of this kind, and this one spread his reputation further. Both brought something new: realistic street scenes full of small observed details, such as the split fingertips of the gloves or the young cheat’s nervous look.

The painting was much admired. More than 50 copies and variants by other painters survive, and Georges de La Tour took up the theme in his own way. The full story of the work is told in the English Wikipedia article.

Where is the original today?

The original hangs in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, which acquired it in 1987.

From Cardinal del Monte’s collection the painting passed to Cardinal Antonio Barberini in Rome, then by inheritance to his nephew Maffeo Barberini, and later to the Colonna-Sciarra family. In the 1890s it vanished from public view.

It resurfaced only in 1987, in a private collection in Zürich, and soon afterwards the museum in Fort Worth bought it. Caravaggio may have painted more than one version, but this one is generally agreed to be the original.

The Cardsharps or another Caravaggio?

This is a lively canvas painting with no church subject and a touch of humour, suited to a home office, a dining room or a games corner. If you like a scene round a table with people in the clothes of Caravaggio’s day, look at The Calling of Saint Matthew too, where men in contemporary dress also sit at a table.

For another table where something unexpected happens, there is The Supper at Emmaus. A conversation between two women in a close space is the subject of Martha and Mary Magdalene, and a single young figure that of Narcissus.

You will find all the famous Caravaggio paintings we paint to order in one place, on the Caravaggio page. Of them all, this is the most worldly: no saints, just three people and a game of cards.

How does our painter paint The Cardsharps?

Each painting is made to your order, layer upon layer, in oil on canvas. The painter first lays in the dark, almost even background and places the three figures so that hands, cards and faces sit exactly right.

Next he builds up the clothes: the deep black of the young man, the yellow and black stripes of the cheat’s doublet, the hats and the torn leather of the gloves.

This Caravaggio reproduction carries brushstrokes and layers of paint that no print has. A good oil painting reproduction changes with the daylight, so in the evening under a lamp the faces look different from how they look at noon.

Which size for which wall?

In short: 56 x 40 or 70 x 52 cm for a desk or a narrow wall, 80 x 59 or 101 x 74 cm above a chest of drawers, 114 x 82 or 140 x 105 cm above a sofa, and 160 x 115 or 200 x 148 cm for a large wall in a dining room or hallway.

The painting is a landscape format and comes in 8 sizes (width x height): 56 x 40, 70 x 52, 80 x 59, 101 x 74, 114 x 82, 140 x 105, 160 x 115 and 200 x 148 cm. The closest to the original is 140 x 105 cm, which is 9.1 cm wider and 10.8 cm taller.

As a painting for the living room above a three-seater sofa, 140 x 105 cm works well, because the three faces then read clearly from across the room. Hang the bottom edge about twenty centimetres above the backrest, so the table with the cards sits at the eye level of someone seated.

Can I have a different size or a frame?

Yes. The original is roughly 7 : 5 in proportion, so we can carry it over to a landscape size that is not on the list without losing the hand with the hidden card at the edge. Write to us through the made-to-order paintings page and we will send you a price and a production time.

We ship it rolled, stretched on a stretcher bar or ready framed. Our workshop in Slovenia handles the stretching and framing and gets every painting ready for the journey. You choose the frame in our 3D application; it is only for picking a frame, and a view of the painting on your own wall is a separate service.

A patinated gold frame suits the warm yellows and browns, while a narrow frame in dark wood suits the dark background and draws the eye towards the table.

When and how does the painting arrive?

Work on your canvas begins the day your order arrives, and it is ready to ship in 15 to 45 working days. Before it leaves, you get a photograph of the finished work, and if you want something changed, we take care of it. There are no customs within Slovenia and the EU, and our returns policy covers every order.

The Cardsharps is a rewarding gift for anyone who loves cards, chess or board games. If you are not sure which size is right, give a wall art voucher instead.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the original Cardsharps?

At the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, which has owned it since 1987.

Who is cheating in the painting?

The boy in the striped doublet, who hides cards in his belt, and the older man who signals to him.

Is it printed?

No. Every one is a hand-painted copy that our painter makes for you on canvas with brush and oil paint.

How big is the original?
