What does Mademoiselle V. in the Costume of an Espada show?<\/h3>\n

A young woman with reddish-blond hair stands in the foreground, dressed as an espada, a Spanish bullfighter. She wears a round black hat over a pink scarf, a short black jacket, black knee breeches with tassels, white stockings and light brown shoes with white bows, with a yellow cloth at her waist.<\/p>\n

Her right hand lifts the sword towards the top left corner, while her left holds the pink cape. She looks not at the bull but straight at us, serious and a little reserved.<\/p>\n

Behind her lies the pale sand of the arena, closed off by a red wooden barrier. On the right a bull is about to charge a mounted picador, and by the barrier a group of toreros watches from a safe distance. A figure in blue appears on top of the barrier; Manet\u2019s signature sits at the lower left.<\/p>\n

Why is the model dressed as a bullfighter?<\/h3>\n

The scene is invented. Victorine Meurent never stood in a bullring; she posed for the painter in costume, and Manet built the bullfight around her. The title admits it: a mademoiselle in costume, a model dressed up.<\/p>\n

Dressing up and make-believe are central to Manet\u2019s work. He wanted attention to move from the subject to the painting itself, and he pushed for his canvases to be seen as fiction.<\/p>\n

The details break the rules as well. A real bullfighter would carry a muleta in the traditional colour, whereas Victorine holds a pink cape, and her shoes are not the usual kind either. The sword suggests she is ready to kill the bull, yet her gaze is turned to us, not to the animal.<\/p>\n

Why does this painting matter?<\/h3>\n

Manet showed it at the 1863 Salon des Refus\u00e9s, alongside Le D\u00e9jeuner sur l\u2019herbe and a portrait of a young man dressed as a majo.<\/p>\n

It is often cited as an example of how Spanish art shaped Manet. The background recalls Goya\u2019s series of prints called the Tauromaquia: the mounted picador comes almost unchanged from plate 5, which also lies behind the bull and the group of toreros. Manet departed from Goya in the way he placed Victorine and by putting the picador in contemporary dress.<\/p>\n

For her stance he reached further back, to the Italian engraver Marcantonio Raimondi and his allegories of the Virtues: the pose resembles Temperance, the angle of the sword resembles Justice. This blend of staging and borrowing from the old masters is typical of Manet.<\/p>\n

Where is the original, and what lies beneath it?<\/h3>\n

The original, oil on canvas, is 165.1 cm high and 127.6 cm wide. It belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York under accession number 29.100.53 and entered the collection in 1929.<\/p>\n

In the 1980s the museum examined it with X-radiography. Beneath Victorine appeared an upside-down female nude, closely resembling one of the nude women in Fran\u00e7ois Boucher\u2019s Diane sortant du bain.<\/p>\n

Mademoiselle V. or another Manet?<\/h3>\n

Mademoiselle V. in the Costume of an Espada is a canvas painting for anyone drawn to Spain, theatrical dressing-up and a bold female gaze.<\/p>\n

Another spectacle watched by a crowd is The Races at Longchamp<\/a>, with horses charging straight towards us. How do we hand-paint Mademoiselle V. in the Costume of an Espada?<\/h3>\n

Manet\u2019s original is a large oil on canvas, more than one and a half metres tall. Ours is an oil painting reproduction: the painter works it in oil on canvas, in the size you choose, building it up layer by layer from the dark masses to the light accents.<\/p>\n

He first sets down the upright figure, the line of the sword and the diagonal formed by horse and bull in the background. Then come the broad areas of sand and red barrier and the deep black of jacket and breeches, in which the folds of the cloth must stay visible.<\/p>\n

Last come the pink cape in a few broad strokes, the white stockings, the yellow cloth and the flush of the cheeks. Manet left the distant toreros sketchy, and so does our painter.<\/p>\n

Which size suits which wall?<\/h3>\n

In short: 30 x 40 or 36 x 48 cm for a small corner or a shelf, 48 x 60 and 60 x 81 cm for a hallway or bedroom, 77 x 100 and 97 x 127 cm above a sofa or sideboard, and 124 x 157 or 156 x 200 cm for a tall wall where the figure can hold the room.<\/p>\n

The bullfighter comes in 8 portrait sizes (width x height): 30 x 40, 36 x 48, 48 x 60, 60 x 81, 77 x 100, 97 x 127, 124 x 157 and 156 x 200 cm. The original measures 127.6 x 165.1 cm (width x height), so all seven sizes up to 124 x 157 cm are smaller than it; 124 x 157 cm comes very close, and 156 x 200 cm is larger than the original.<\/p>\n

As a painting for the living room it works best at 97 x 127 or 124 x 157 cm, where the upright figure has room to breathe.<\/p>\n
