What does The Matador Saluting show?<\/h3>\n

Against a bare olive-brown ground a man stands full length, turned slightly to the left. He has dark, smoothly combed hair and a thick black beard with side-whiskers, and his gaze is lifted upwards. His right arm reaches high in front of him, holding the black hat, whose yellow inside catches the light.<\/p>\n

He wears a short silver-grey jacket, densely embroidered and hung with tassels at the shoulders and sleeves. Beneath it show a white shirt and a pale blue tie, and a broad pink sash is wound round his waist. His knee breeches end in silver tassels, followed by white stockings and flat black shoes with bows.<\/p>\n

In his lowered left hand he holds the red cape, folded over a stick, so that it falls almost to his ankles. The small signature manet sits at the lower left.<\/p>\n

What does the matador\u2019s salute mean?<\/h3>\n

The painting shows no fight, only a calm moment in front of the crowd. The usual reading is that the matador is receiving the crowd\u2019s applause at the end of the fight. Th\u00e9odore Duret, the first buyer, saw it differently: to him the matador is asking the crowd\u2019s permission before the final part of the fight begins.<\/p>\n

The model was Manet\u2019s brother Eug\u00e8ne. \u00c9tienne Moreau-N\u00e9laton and Adolphe Tabarant, who both wrote books on Manet, agree on this.<\/p>\n

Manet painted it after his trip to Spain in 1865, and it shows how much he admired the country and its art. His earlier portrait of Mademoiselle V. in the costume of an espada is seen as a fantasy; here, by contrast, Charles S. Moffett finds a composition and palette that Manet drew from Diego Vel\u00e1zquez and Francisco de Zurbar\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

Why does this painting matter?<\/h3>\n

\u00c9douard Manet (1832\u20131883), a pupil of Thomas Couture, came from a wealthy Paris family and was one of the first nineteenth-century artists to paint modern life; he is seen as a pivotal figure between Realism and Impressionism.<\/p>\n

The Matador Saluting is his first large-format work: one man alone, with no setting, carried by pose and colour.<\/p>\n

Where is the original, and how did it reach New York?<\/h3>\n

The original, oil on canvas measuring 171.1 x 113 cm (height x width), belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, accession number 29.100.52.<\/p>\n

The first certain record of it dates from 1867, when Manet showed it at his own exhibition in the pavilion by the Pont de l\u2019Alma in Paris.<\/p>\n

Its first buyer was Th\u00e9odore Duret. Louisine Havemeyer later bought it from him after some hesitation, fearing the canvas would be too large for her husband. She made up her mind when Mary Cassatt told her it was exactly the format Manet had wanted. Henry Osborne Havemeyer then grew so fond of large canvases that he also bought Manet\u2019s Young Man in the Costume of a Majo. Both works were bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum in 1929.<\/p>\n

The Matador Saluting or another Manet?<\/h3>\n

This is a canvas painting for anyone drawn to Spain, to costume and to calm, upright portraits that fill a wall with a single figure.<\/p>\n

A similar dark, Spanish tone runs through Little Lange<\/a>, a boy of about five from the Lange family in a wide black hat and a long cape. A different mood fills The Croquet Game<\/a>, a sunny garden where the painter Alfred Stevens and the model Victorine Meurent are among the players. Nina de Callias reclines on a sofa before a wall of Japanese fans in Woman with Fans<\/a>, and Dead Eagle Owl<\/a> is a hunting still life Manet painted at Versailles in 1881.<\/p>\n

How do we hand-paint The Matador Saluting?<\/h3>\n

Manet\u2019s original is an oil on canvas more than 170 cm tall. Ours is an oil painting reproduction that the painter builds on fresh canvas, in oil on canvas and at the size you pick, one layer over another.<\/p>\n

He first sets down the outline of the figure, the raised arm with the hat and the diagonal of the red cape, since these three accents hold the whole composition. Then come the warm olive-brown ground and the shadow on the floor, and only after that the face, the beard and the white shirt.<\/p>\n

The jacket is the hardest part. Manet suggested the silver embroidery with short, dense touches of pale grey, bluish and white, without drawing each pattern. Our painter follows the same method, so the jacket glitters from across the room and stays lively paint up close.<\/p>\n

Seven sizes are smaller, up to 100 x 155 cm, which already comes close; only 128 x 191 cm exceeds it both ways.<\/p>\n

As a painting for the living room it works best at 81 x 120 or 100 x 155 cm, hung on its own between two windows or beside the sofa.<\/p>\n
