Fishing is a painting by Édouard Manet from about 1862–63: a broad river with a rainbow, fishermen in a flat boat, and at the front right a couple in seventeenth-century dress with a brown dog. The original is oil on canvas, 76.8 x 123.2 cm, and hangs in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. With us it is painted by hand in oil on canvas, in one of 8 landscape sizes between 46 x 30 and 200 x 130 cm, or made to measure. Once your copy is finished, a photograph of it reaches you before we pack it.

</colgroup>

Fishing – Édouard Manet

What does Fishing show?

A calm, dark green river winds between grassy slopes and trees. On it lies a long, flat boat: a bare-backed man leans over the side hauling in a net, a second braces himself on a long pole, and between them sits a small figure in a straw hat. On the left bank a lone angler sits with his rod, and in the bottom left corner a small boat moored in the reeds carries the signature éd.Manet.

At the front right stand a man and a woman in seventeenth-century fashion. She wears a blue gown under a black cloak and a broad feathered black hat, and holds a red fan; he has a white ruff, red sleeves, yellow breeches and red stockings. Before them a slim brown dog, rather like a greyhound, lifts its muzzle towards the pair.

In the grey sky at the top left a rainbow comes down towards a distant church spire; on the right, among slender pale yellow trees, a few tiny nude figures can be made out.

What story does the painting tell?

The couple are Manet himself and Suzanne Leenhoff, whom he married in October 1863. He posed them the way Rubens painted himself and his wife Helena Fourment in The Park of the Château de Steen, now in Vienna.

Manet had kept the relationship from his father, who died in September 1862, so the Met thinks the canvas was most likely painted between that death and the wedding, and calls it a variation on a wedding portrait. In 1977 Isaacs read the rainbow over the church as a sign of hopes for the marriage.

Emily Beeny notes that this is the only painting in which Manet shows Suzanne without a wedding ring. The museum names the little boy fishing in the background as Léon Leenhoff, Suzanne’s son, and Nancy Locke points out that a “manet” was a kind of fine fishing net, so the net in the boat may be a pun on the family name.

Why is Fishing so special?

The man on the right is one of only four firmly identified self-portraits of Manet, as MaryAnne Stevens wrote in 2012. Diana Greenwald reads the picture as a tribute to Suzanne and as Manet’s claim to be a new Rubens, with his own Helena at his side.

The museum says the composition borrows from Rubens’s landscapes, following Delacroix’s advice to Manet to study and copy Rubens, and Reff linked the stooping fisherman to a Raphael cartoon of the miraculous draught of fishes.

Manet (1832–1883), a Paris-born pupil of Thomas Couture, was among the first nineteenth-century painters of modern life and a pivotal figure between Realism and Impressionism. See the English Wikipedia article on Manet; it covers the painter, not this canvas.

Where is the original, and who owned it?

The original, oil on canvas measuring 76.8 x 123.2 cm (height x width), belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (accession number 57.10) and hangs in Gallery 810 at The Met Fifth Avenue.

After Manet’s death it stayed with his heirs and, from 1885 at the latest, with his widow Suzanne; Emily Beeny thinks Manet probably first gave it to his mother. In 1897 it passed through the dealer Gaston-Alexandre Camentron to Durand-Ruel, which kept it until 1950, and the museum bought it in 1957 with a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Bernhard.

Manet showed it at his own 1867 exhibition on the Avenue de l’Alma simply as Landscape. Where exactly it was painted is debated: Duret saw the Seine at Saint-Ouen, others point to Gennevilliers, where the Manet family owned property.

Fishing or another Manet?

Fishing is a canvas painting for lovers of green river scenery and of stories hidden in small details.

Léon Leenhoff, whom the museum sees in the boy fishing, returns a few years later as a teenager in Young Boy Peeling a Pear, paring a green pear with a knife over a white plate.

For more landscape there is Effect of Snow on Petit-Montrouge, a winter view from the Siege of Paris, and The Funeral, the domes of Paris above a small procession. City life fills The Waitress, a woman serving beer before a stage.

These and other famous Manet paintings, each painted to order, are gathered on our Édouard Manet page.

How do we hand-paint Fishing?

Manet’s original is an oil on canvas 123.2 cm wide. Ours is an oil painting reproduction on fresh canvas: the painter works in oil on canvas, in the size you choose, laying the paint on in layers.

He first places the horizon, the banks, the boat and the couple, since the scene rests on their spacing; then the dark green water, the light slopes, the grey sky and the rainbow; last the net, the ruff, the fan, the dog and the reeds, with the trees left soft and loose, as Manet left them.

Which size suits which wall?

In short: 46 x 30 or 60 x 36 cm for a shelf or a narrow wall, 66 x 41 and 90 x 55 cm above a chest of drawers or a bed, 110 x 72 and 140 x 90 cm above a sofa, and 160 x 100 or 200 x 130 cm for a long wall in a living or dining room.

We paint Fishing in 8 landscape sizes (width x height): 46 x 30, 60 x 36, 66 x 41, 90 x 55, 110 x 72, 140 x 90, 160 x 100 and 200 x 130 cm. The original measures 123.2 x 76.8 cm (width x height), so the six sizes up to 110 x 72 cm are smaller, with 110 x 72 cm already close, while 140 x 90, 160 x 100 and 200 x 130 cm are larger than the original.

As a painting for the living room it looks best at 140 x 90 or 160 x 100 cm above a long sofa, where every figure reads clearly.

Can I order a custom size or a frame?

Yes. For other proportions we keep the boat, the couple and the rainbow whole and adjust the sky. Tell us the size you need for the river scene, and a price and a date come back to you.

Your Fishing travels rolled, stretched on a stretcher bar or framed; our workshop in Slovenia does the stretching and framing. The 3D app on our site is only for choosing the frame, and a view of the painting on your own wall is a separate service.

When will my painting arrive?

Work on the river and the couple starts once you confirm the order, and your painting is ready to ship within 15 to 45 working days. Before it leaves, we send you a photograph of it and make any changes you ask for.

Shipping within Slovenia and the rest of the EU carries no customs duties, and our returns policy covers the order.

As Manet painted himself here with his bride-to-be, Fishing makes a fine wedding or anniversary present. Not sure of the wall? A gift voucher lets the recipient pick the size of this riverside scene.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the original?

At The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Gallery 810, accession number 57.10.

Whom did Manet paint as the couple on the right?

Himself and Suzanne Leenhoff, whom he married in October 1863, posed like Rubens and Helena Fourment.

Is this a print?

No. Each hand-painted copy we make is worked with brushes in oil on canvas, with no printing at all.

How large is Manet’s original?

76.8 x 123.2 cm (height x width); our 140 x 90, 160 x 100 and 200 x 130 cm sizes are larger.

Can I order it in a different format?

Yes. Send us the width and height, and an offer with price and date follows.

How long does it take to make?

Between 15 and 45 working days, with a photograph of your Fishing before it ships.

Does it suit a bedroom or a wedding gift?

Yes. The calm river suits a bedroom, and the couple makes it a lovely wedding present.

What does the rainbow over the church mean?

In 1977 Isaacs read it as a sign of hopes for the marriage of Manet and Suzanne.
