First Lady on Horseback – Fernando Botero

First Lady on Horseback is a 1989 painting by Fernando Botero: a full-figured first lady in a pink dress and sash rides a horse among banana leaves. We paint our hand-painted study of First Lady on Horseback to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 50 × 55 cm to 185 × 203 cm or in a custom size. Before First Lady on Horseback is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.

What does First Lady on Horseback show?

In First Lady on Horseback a round lady with dark hair pinned up sits on a dark brown horse in a low-cut pink dress, white gloves and an orange sash with a rosette across her chest; she holds a thin riding crop, and large green banana leaves rise behind her. Botero painted it as the companion to The President, which is why First Lady on Horseback feels solemn, satirical and friendly at once.

How is our hand-painted study of First Lady on Horseback made?

Our painters paint the study of First Lady on Horseback by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of First Lady on Horseback has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When First Lady on Horseback is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.

Which size of First Lady on Horseback suits your room?

For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose First Lady on Horseback in 90 × 100 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 50 × 55 cm. First Lady on Horseback is available in 50 × 55 cm, 60 × 65 cm, 70 × 80 cm, 90 × 100 cm, 110 × 120 cm, 130 × 140 cm, 150 × 160 cm and 185 × 203 cm. The 185 × 203 cm size of First Lady on Horseback is the size of the original. A simple rule for First Lady on Horseback: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.

How does First Lady on Horseback arrive, and when?

We ship First Lady on Horseback rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of First Lady on Horseback are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of First Lady on Horseback is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of First Lady on Horseback painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.

Frequently asked questions about First Lady on Horseback

Is First Lady on Horseback a print?

No. Every brushstroke of First Lady on Horseback is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.

Can I order First Lady on Horseback in a size that is not listed?

Yes. We also paint First Lady on Horseback in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order First Lady on Horseback.

Does First Lady on Horseback go with The President?

Yes, the two 1989 paintings are a pair: the president rides in one and the first lady in the other, both among banana leaves; together they hang well side by side.
