Landscape by the Sea is Degas\u2019s view across dry, burnt grass towards a line of trees, behind which a narrow band of sea appears in the upper right corner. What does this landscape show?<\/h3>\n

A slope above the sea, late in the season. The grass is dry and burnt, and a narrow pale path winds through it, turning left from the lower edge and disappearing behind the shoulder of the slope. Above the grass runs a row of slender trees, and behind them, at the upper right, a flat band of sea appears and passes almost seamlessly into the sky. There are no people. No houses, no boats, no road leading anywhere in particular. That is why this work suits someone who wants quiet on the wall rather than a story.<\/p>\n

What is on the canvas?<\/h3>\n

The format is landscape and divided into three bands. The lowest and largest is the slope of dry grass in ochre, straw and olive, laid on in short separated strokes that do not merge into one plane. A pale path winds through it; it enters below and right of centre, turns to the left and is lost. The middle band is a lower green-brown bank that closes the slope off. The upper band carries the line of trees: eight to ten slender trunks, dark and slightly leaning, with sparse foliage in blue-green and olive that thins towards the right until a single tree is left. Behind them and to their right lies the sea \u2013 a flat, pale blue-grey band merging with an empty sky. The left edge is lighter and open. In the lower right, on two lines, stands a handwritten dedication with a name beneath it.<\/p>\n

Why does this particular view matter?<\/h3>\n

Because Degas was not a landscape painter and painted landscape rarely. He is known for rehearsals, dancers and interiors, where the light comes from above and from the side; here there is neither a room nor a figure to hold the eye. What remains is the arrangement of the bands and the colour. That is what makes the motif unusual among his works: it shows how a painter whose real subject was the body in motion assembles a scene in which nothing moves at all.<\/p>\n

What does the scene mean?<\/h3>\n

Less than it appears to, and that is its strength. There is no story and no stage; there is a time of day and a season. The dry grass says the summer is over, the trees all lean the same way, which means wind off the sea, and the light is diffuse, without sun or shadow. Impressionism<\/strong> for Degas meant above all the city and artificial light, so an impressionist painting<\/strong> of this kind is a rarity in his work \u2013 an outdoor scene that is neither city nor stage. It works as a plane of colour you can look at for a long time without anything urging you on \u2014 a particular kind of wall art<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The sea appears in Degas more than once, but almost always differently. How is our hand-painted version made?<\/h3>\n

It is made with a brush and oil colours, not a printer. This motif is demanding because there is no drawing for the painter to lean on: everything is carried by colour, set down in short separated strokes with the ground left visible between them. If the strokes are smoothed, the grass loses its dryness and the scene becomes ordinary. So the painter builds the slope in layers and leaves the granular surface the original has. Every reproduction<\/strong> is made afresh and no two copies are quite the same, because a hand does not repeat the same stroke twice; every hand-painted copy<\/strong> is therefore its own. If you do not know which: 80 x 60 cm. The format is landscape and the scene is quiet, so it works where a stronger motif would tire. The 36 x 27 and 50 x 40 cm sizes are for a shelf, a hallway or a group of smaller works; 60 x 45 and 70 x 50 cm go above a chest of drawers or a desk; 80 x 60 and 100 x 75 cm are the sizes above a sofa, where the work finally has room.
