Willem de Kooning – The Glazier

</colgroup>

The Glazier – Willem de Kooning

The Glazier is a painting by Willem de Kooning from around 1940: a man in grey clothes sits in a quiet, greenish-grey room, beside a table and a vase in red tones. We paint our hand-painted study of The Glazier to order on canvas, in oil or acrylic, in 8 sizes from 50 × 60 cm to 130 × 160 cm or in a custom size. Before The Glazier is dispatched, we send you a photo of the finished painting.

What does The Glazier show?

In The Glazier the colours are restrained, grey-green and pink, and the outline of the figure is soft, as if still unfinished; the face is thoughtful and a little absent. This is the early de Kooning, who in the 1930s and 1940s painted lone male figures in empty rooms before he turned to abstraction. The original The Glazier is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

How is our hand-painted study of The Glazier made?

Our painters paint the study of The Glazier by hand, with brushstrokes of different thickness, separately for every order. We paint in oil or acrylic, depending on the subject and the size, so the surface of The Glazier has a real paint texture that a print does not have. When The Glazier is finished, we photograph it and send you the photo for approval.

Which size of The Glazier suits your room?

For the wall above a sofa or a sideboard choose The Glazier in 90 × 110 cm, and for a bedroom, hallway or work corner 50 × 60 cm. The Glazier is available in 50 × 60 cm, 60 × 75 cm, 70 × 90 cm, 80 × 100 cm, 90 × 110 cm, 100 × 120 cm, 112 × 137 cm and 130 × 160 cm. A simple rule for The Glazier: it should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it, with its centre about 150 cm from the floor.

How does The Glazier arrive, and when?

We ship The Glazier rolled in a sturdy tube, stretched on 2.5 cm deep wooden stretcher bars, or framed – you choose when you order. Stretching and framing of The Glazier are done in our workshop in Slovenia. When a size of The Glazier is in stock, it reaches you within 6 working days; a study of The Glazier painted to order reaches you in 15 to 45 days.

Frequently asked questions about The Glazier

Is The Glazier a print?

No. Every brushstroke of The Glazier is painted by hand on canvas, so the paint visibly stands up from the surface.

Can I order The Glazier in a size that is not listed?

Yes. We also paint The Glazier in a custom size; enter the width and height you want when you order The Glazier.

Is The Glazier abstract?

No. The Glazier comes from de Kooning’s early years, when he still painted figures; his abstract paintings came a few years later, around 1950.

Is The Glazier a good gift?

The Glazier is a gift for a lover of de Kooning, of figurative portraits or of calm, muted colours. If you are unsure which size of The Glazier to choose, give a gift voucher.
