Joy I – rings glowing around a tree

Wall art sets concentric circles glowing across three canvases in red, orange, blue and turquoise, as though the room had filled with rings of light. A dark tree stands at the centre on a thin trunk with branches curled into spirals, and an almost white light opens behind it. A work like this decides the mood of the whole wall.

Technique & Texture

Every hoop is painted by hand, circle after circle, with visible breaks and an uneven thickness of paint. The colours do not mix between hoops but stand side by side, which is what keeps the transitions sharp. The ground between the circles is filled with short strokes in complementary tones.

The Joy I painting is three ringed canvases hung side by side in a row, and every size in the menu is the whole set, width first; each canvas is a third of the total width and the full height. At 120 x 50 cm one canvas is 40 cm wide and 50 cm tall; at 150 x 60 cm, 50 cm wide and 60 cm tall; at 180 x 65 cm, 60 cm wide and 65 cm tall; at 195 x 75 cm, 65 cm wide and 75 cm tall; at 220 x 80 cm, about 73 cm wide and 80 cm tall; at 240 x 90 cm, 80 cm wide and 90 cm tall; at 260 x 95 cm, about 87 cm wide and 95 cm tall; at 275 x 100 cm, about 92 cm wide and 100 cm tall; at 290 x 105 cm, about 97 cm wide and 105 cm tall; and at 300 x 110 cm, 100 cm wide and 110 cm tall.

Above a 180 cm bed or along a hallway wall, 120 x 50 cm fits. Above a 220 cm sofa, choose 150 x 60 cm, and above a 300 cm sofa, 195 x 75 cm, about two thirds of its width. From 240 x 90 cm up, the set suits a long living-room wall, an open-plan space or the wall above a big corner sofa.

The Motif

The left canvas is warm, in red and orange; the right cold, in blue and turquoise; the middle carries the bright core and the tree. The rings vary in size and overlap, with smaller ones filling the gaps between the larger. The branches reach out from the centre to both sides and stitch the warm and the cold halves together.

Styling & Placement

The colours are saturated, so it belongs in a room that can take a real accent. It is a painting on canvas that divides the wall into warm and cold and holds it together with a single tree: a living room, a child’s room, a shared space. Best on a white or light grey wall, beside plain, unpatterned furniture.
