Flowers in a Vase II – copper on one side, silver on the other

Painting on canvas parts its ground down the middle, warm copper-gold on the left half and cool white-silver on the right, and sets a tall dark brown vase exactly on the seam: wall art with a single seam, and the vase is the only thing holding it shut. The white flowers above it are larger and more open than anything else on the canvas.

Technique and texture

Each petal is a thick plastic press of paint that leaves a raised ridge at its rim, so every flower throws a small shadow of its own. The gold centres were dabbed in last, once the white beneath had already set. Both halves of the ground were knifed into the same flat blocks with the same raised edges — colour is all that tells them apart.

The motif

The bouquet opens wider to the left than to the right, and single blossoms stand away from the cluster on thin stems. Dark green leaves push up between them and give the white mass something to sit against. Because the division of the ground falls exactly behind the vase, nothing else on the canvas crosses it.

Setting and placement

Copper on one side and silver on the other means the painting will pick up metal fittings wherever it hangs. Brass handles, a steel lamp or a chrome rail in the same room will read as deliberate — bedroom, dining room or hall.
