Office 2 – cold bands and gold seams

Wall art threads thin gold-brown seams between horizontal bands of blue-green, dark green, cream and near-black: abstract painting of this kind earns its keep by putting the brightest thing on the canvas in the narrowest place.

Technique and texture

Those seams are the lightest passages in the picture, built from gold, white and blue laid tight against one another. The colour bands are thinned and pulled downward, so a darker ground shows through beneath them. Nothing stands up in relief, which is why the surface reads like coloured glass.

The motif

The sequence runs from light at the top to darkest at the foot, so the canvas behaves like a section cut through depth. The gold seams do not settle into straight lines but wave slightly, and that is what keeps a calm structure alive. Pale mallow passages appear between the cream and blue-green fields and soften the cold range.

Setting and placement

Grey, white and timber surfaces are exactly what this palette was made to sit beside, so it enters an already furnished room without asking anything of it. The landscape crop gives it the wall above a wide piece of furniture.
