Cézanne spent the period between 1872 and 1874 in the city of Pontoise, where he collaborated with the painter Pissarro. During this period, he moved closer to the Impressionist style, but still retained a more structured composition and a sober atmosphere in his paintings. In the oil on canvas The Village Road, Auvers Cézanne’s palette of colors still remains darker, and some stronger contrasts can already be observed.
