Paintings on the wall

On this page you can see our hand-painted paintings on canvas shown in different rooms – living room, bedroom, dining room and office. The examples help you judge which size, format and subject suit your wall. Next to the photos are links to the paintings, and further down are tips for each room and answers to the most common questions.

Every painting is painted by hand by our painters – not a print. You receive it rolled, stretched on a frame or framed, and before dispatch we send you a photo of the finished painting.

Reproductions of famous painters in the room

Famous paintings such as Klimt’s The Kiss or Van Gogh’s The Starry Night suit a living room, dining room or office, where the painting should draw the eye. Find more among the reproductions of famous paintings.

Studies after works by famous painters in the room

Works after Pollock, Miró, Botero, Picasso and Dalí bring a strong, contemporary accent to a room.

Which painting for which room

A quick size rule. A painting above furniture should be about two thirds as wide as the furniture below it. On an empty wall with no furniture, it should take up about half to two thirds of the wall width. A multi-panel painting counts as one piece: measure the width of all panels including the gaps.

FurnitureFurniture widthRecommended painting width
Sofa180 cmabout 120 cm
Sofa210 cmabout 140 cm
Sofa240 cmabout 160 cm
Bed160 cmabout 105 cm
Bed180 cmabout 120 cm
Sideboard120 cmabout 80 cm
Dining table180 cmabout 120 cm

Living room. Above a sofa the painting should be about two thirds as wide as the sofa, with its lower edge 20 to 30 cm above the backrest. A long wall suits a large horizontal painting or a multi-panel painting, a narrow wall a vertical one. For a calm room choose colours that repeat in the cushions or rug; for an accent, one strong colour. A long wall also suits a triptych: see our triptych paintings.

Bedroom. The same rule applies above the bed: about two thirds of the bed’s width. Most people choose calmer subjects and softer colours – landscapes, flowers or gentle abstraction. Two matching smaller paintings above the bedside tables work well if there is a window or shelf above the bed. A selection of calm paintings is on our paintings for the bedroom page.

Single-panel paintings in the room

One painting is the right choice for a narrow wall, above a sideboard or as the focal point of a room. Find them all among the single-panel paintings.

Dining room and kitchen. Above the dining table choose a painting narrower than the table and hang it a little lower than elsewhere, so you see it while seated. In the kitchen hang it away from the hob and sink, where there is steam and grease. Still lifes, fruit, flowers in a vase and Arcimboldo are on our kitchen and dining room paintings page.

Hallway and stairs. Narrow hallways take vertical paintings or a row of smaller paintings at the same height. On stairs, follow the slope and hang every painting at the same height above the steps. Portrait-format paintings for the hall are collected on our hallway wall art page.

Office. A painting behind the desk is seen by visitors and on video calls; abstract paintings and landscapes feel calm and do not distract.

How high to hang it. The centre of the painting should be at about eye level, 145 to 155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, keep the lower edge 20 to 30 cm above it.

How to hang it. Hang smaller stretched paintings on one hook and larger ones on two so they stay straight. Before drilling, tape a paper template the size of the painting to the wall. With multi-panel paintings, hang the middle panel first and then the others at equal gaps.

Two-panel paintings in the room

A two-panel painting splits the subject across two canvases and fills a wider wall above a sofa or bed. See the two-panel paintings.

Multi-panel paintings in the room

Multi-panel paintings of three or more panels cover a long wall and bring movement to the room. Hang the panels a few centimetres apart (usually 2 to 5 cm). Find them all among the multi-panel paintings.

Style, colour and light

Interior style. A modern, minimalist room suits large abstract paintings with few colours. Scandinavian style loves light tones, landscapes and botanical subjects. A classically furnished home is completed by a framed reproduction of an old master. In an industrial space with concrete and metal, bold abstract paintings stand out, including ones with black and gold tones.

Colour. Pick one or two colours from the room – from cushions, rug or curtains – and look for a painting that contains them. If you want the painting to stand out, choose a colour the room does not have yet.

Light and position. Do not hang the painting in strong direct sunlight, above a radiator or fireplace, or in a damp room. In the evening a ceiling spotlight or picture light can light it.

Rolled, stretched or framed

A rolled painting is the cheapest to ship; it suits you if you want to have it stretched or framed yourself. A stretched painting is mounted on a wooden stretcher and ready to hang; the stretcher is 2.5 cm deep. A framed painting arrives in the frame you choose – from more than 50 frames. Two-panel and multi-panel paintings are always sent stretched and unframed; on request we frame each panel separately. Stretching and framing are done in Slovenia.

Caring for the painting

Dust a hand-painted painting on canvas now and then with a dry, soft cloth or a soft brush. Do not use water or cleaning products. Kept away from direct sunlight and damp, its colours stay beautiful for a long time.

All modern paintings are in the Modern and abstract paintings category, and reproductions among the reproductions of famous paintings. A painting in another size or from your own idea can be ordered among our custom paintings.

Frequently asked questions

What size painting should go above a sofa?

About two thirds of the sofa’s width. For a 210 cm sofa that means a painting or multi-panel painting about 140 cm wide. Keep the lower edge 20 to 30 cm above the backrest.

What size painting should go above a bed?

About two thirds of the bed width: for a 160 cm bed about 105 cm, for a 180 cm bed about 120 cm. Keep the lower edge 20 to 30 cm above the headboard.

How high should a painting hang?

The centre should be at about eye level, 145 to 155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, keep the lower edge 20 to 30 cm above it.

One large painting or several small ones?

One large painting feels calm and makes a good focal point. A multi-panel painting or a row of smaller paintings livens up a long wall better. With multi-panel paintings, leave a few centimetres between the panels.

Which painting suits a bedroom?

Usually calmer subjects and soft colours: landscapes, flowers or gentle abstraction. Above the bed the painting should be about two thirds as wide as the bed. See the selection: paintings for the bedroom.

Rolled, stretched or framed – which should I choose?

Rolled is the cheapest to ship and suits you if you will have it stretched or framed yourself. Stretched is ready to hang. Framed arrives in the frame you choose, from more than 50 frames. Multi-panel paintings always arrive stretched, unframed.

Can you show me how the painting will look on my wall?

Yes. Send us a photo of your wall and one measurement, for example the width of your sofa, and we prepare a free preview of the painting in your room, usually within 24 hours.

Can I order a painting in a different size?

Yes. We can paint it in the size that fits your wall, or from your own idea – see our custom paintings.

How do I care for a painting on canvas?

Dust it now and then with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use water or cleaning products, and do not hang it in strong direct sunlight or in a damp room.

Are the paintings hand-painted, and how do I receive them?

Yes, every painting is painted by hand by our painters, not printed. You receive it rolled, stretched or framed; stretching and framing are done in Slovenia. Before dispatch we send you a photo of the finished painting. Paintings in stock are dispatched within 6 working days; paintings painted to order arrive in 15 to 45 working days.
