In the early 80s of the 19th century, Renoir devoted himself to artistic research. During this time, he made a living by painting portraits and still lifes, finding possibilities for experimentation in still life painting as well. Renoir later stated that he was very relaxed when painting still lifes, as he was free to experiment with different techniques without worrying about the final appearance of the painting.
