Max Jacob represents an important link between the Symbolists and the Surrealists, which is evident from his poetry and paintings.
During the period of his friendship with Jacobo, Modigliani was moving into a more reductionist form of sculpture in his paintings, in which less isolated figures inhabited more integrated and shallow spaces. However, it was Jacob’s fusion of the spiritual, the hopeless, and the theophysical that helped guide Modigliani toward more symbolic forms of geometric simplicity.
