The extremely appreciated series of paintings with the motif of naked reclining women began to be created in 1916. In these works, the painter continues the tradition of depicting Venus in a slightly different way – the eroticism of the early traditional figures in the paintings is always involved in a mythological or comic context, while Modigliani does not yes business – his women on screen are directly frank and provocative. In a series of around two dozen paintings, in which the artist depicted always professional models and never girlfriends or lovers, the figures lie on a dark bedspread that emphasizes the tone of their skin; we see them up close and usually from above. Their stylized bodies occupy almost the entire canvas, and their hands and feet are often outside the frame of the painting. Sometimes sleeping, often facing the viewer, like this graceful figure of a woman in one of the most famous paintings from this artist’s series.
