The painting belongs to a small group of Modigliani’s works in which he depicted young people. The artist recorded the title of the painting in the lower right corner of the canvas, where he called the portrait “peasant boy“. However, the same model also appears in a painting in the Louvre collection, where the painter calls it a “young apprentice“.
The artist was strongly influenced by the style of the painter Cézanne, so we can interpret that this oil on canvas is a kind of tribute to Cézanne’s later series of rural workers, which are placed in the middle of the canvas and painted mainly in blue shades.
