Gustav Klimt – Expectation
In the oil on canvas Expectation Klimt shows his mastery of the mosaic more than in any of his other masterpieces. Klimt’s artwork incorporates elements of the exotic world of the Far East and flirts with the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna, adding an air of exotic luxury and biological and ornamental excellence to the Byzantine spirals.

The tall woman represents expectation, expressing a characteristic feature of Klimt’s women in this reflection. The oriental influence can be felt in the painting, as the woman shows off her ornamental headdress and numerous jewelry. While much of the work shows eye-shaped patterns, in the painting Expectation we clearly see several eyes in the dress of the depicted woman staring at us, the viewer.
