Boy In A Red Waistcoat oil on canvas is both a surprisingly modern painting that reflects Cézanne’s attachment to the past, and also a “portrait” composed entirely of shapes and colors. In this painting, Cézanne used colors that have nothing to do with human skin (greens and lilacs) for the boy’s face and hands. The background of oil on canvas, which consists of angles and slight arches, is difficult to recognize as heavy curtains and the back of a chair. Cézanne’s art is balanced between the old masters, who were faithful to the depiction of beautiful and interesting objects, and the modern abstract way of painting, which is represented by the moving harmony of color touches that do not represent anything.
