Cézanne’s depictions of people can be considered still lifes, as he required his subjects to sit perfectly still. Posing for Cézanne was in some ways like a nightmare. The painter was extremely temperamental and excitable, and he also painted very slowly – this is probably why his subjects are always exhausted and serious. Cézanne approached painting people, landscapes and still lifes in one way.
