After settling in the city of Aix in 1899, Cézanne ventured into its surroundings every day in search of motifs for his paintings. He was attracted by Château Noir, which he depicted in several oils on canvas. As is typical of the landscape paintings of the painter’s late period, Cézanne also used a thick layer of paint with strong strokes in this oil on canvas.
