The oil on canvas Rocks and Branches at Bibémus shows a section of rock that cannot be placed in context, nor can it be determined what this section actually represents. Descending from the top to the bottom of this image is a configuration of a dead, dying, or otherwise fallen tree. Cézanne may have only painted a branch, or the larger part of the tree may be in the painting – there is no way to prove this. The painter himself is somehow absent in this painting, so the motif is even more puzzling, even if Cézanne’s touch can be recognized in the painting style.
