The painting Parahi te marae shows the real and fictional aspects of Gauguin’s works during this period. In the foreground of the painting is rich vegetation with colorful flowers on an almost black background. This part is separated from the rest of the painting by a Chinese-style fence. The rest of the painting shows a hill in yellow, with Gauguin painting the ocean in the background. The temple in the title is the black idol statue on the right side of the yellow hill.
At the time of this painting, there were no temples, idol statues, or Chinese-style fences in Tahiti. Gauguin, always open to inspiration from different sources, drew inspiration for this painting from Moerenhout’s book.
