Jeanne Hébuterne, described by the writer Charles-Albert Cingria as gentle, shy, quiet and delicate, was Modigliani’s central muse and also the painter’s companion. After Modigliani contracted tuberculosis and died in 1920, a pregnant Jeanne threw herself from the fifth floor just one day later.
Modigliani depicted Jeanne in several paintings that depict the passionate and tragic relationship between the artist and his muse.
Image Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne IV reached a sale price of EUR 8.5 million at the Sotheby’s auction in November 2010.
