Oil on canvas The Dance Class and its second version (Dancing Class) are Degas’ most ambitious compositions with figures, if we exclude the author’s historical paintings.
The picture shows twenty-four women, ballerinas and their mothers, waiting while one of the ballerinas performs her audition performance. The oil on canvas class is taught by Jules Perrot, one of the most famous dancers and ballet masters in Europe.
