Edgar Degas – The Rape
| Year of creation: | 1868-1869 |
| Original size: | 114.3 cm x 81.3 cm |
| Painting style: | Impressionism |
| Original technique: | Oil on canvas |
| Located: | Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA |
Degas used a distorted perspective in this oil on canvas that evokes unpleasant feelings. A standing tall man ominously lingers in the shadows of the artwork, blocking the entrance or exit from the room. The woman in the painting is bent over, her position is vulnerable, and she turns her head away from the observer.
According to some sources, the artwork does not depict rape, but a scene from Zola’s novel in which a woman asks her lover to kill her husband.
