In the last two years of the artist’s life, frantic gesticulation can be observed in his works. Seurat studied and collected Jules Cheret’s posters, which is also evident from the composition of the present painting. The curled moustache, the shape of which the painter repeats on the lips of the smiling dancer; decorations and ribbons on the dancer’s shoulders and shoes; the strange similarity between the legs of the male and female figures – all this suggests a penchant for interesting details.
