Cézanne painted the oil on canvas Girl at the Piano on an estate near the town of Aix that was owned by his parents. The figures in the painting are the artist’s sister and mother. Oil on canvas is mainly based on the contrast between white and black shades, but the atmosphere is by no means pessimistic. The composition in the painting is balanced and expresses unity, with the figures and objects in this oil on canvas being part of a unified environment. The scene is by no means everyday, Cézanne managed to paint a wonderful ceremonial scene.
