The motif of this oil on canvas appeared already in Cézanne’s early period, but both works that he wanted to exhibit in the Salon gallery in 1867 were rejected. The painter also returned to this theme in the late 60s and early 70s of the 19th century. The final version of the oil on canvas Afternoon in Naples differs from its predecessors primarily in its expressive style, Cézanne’s interpretation of the Impressionist technique, which he developed during his collaboration with the painter Pissarro between 1872 and 1874.
