At the end of his life, Paul Cézanne painted three large canvases with the motif of female nude figures in nature. These three works represent the culmination of Cézanne’s exploration of the nude figure, his last testament within the great French tradition of narrative painting of nature and human character. One of these works is the oil on canvas Nudes in Landscape, in which the depiction of naked women is almost claustrophobic, as Cézanne places them in a dark valley next to a large tree. The nude female figures are statue-like and almost robotic; Cézanne’s attempt to “freeze” the nude female figures is also an attempt to limit their sensuality.
