The oil on canvas The Green Christ was painted by Gauguin in the autumn of 1889. Together with the painting Yellow Christ, it represents one of the most important works of symbolism in the art of painting.
It depicts a Breton woman at the foot of Calvary next to a statue depicting the crucifixion of Jesus. Gauguin moved the scene to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the small town of Le Pould. In fact, the statue of the Crucifixion of Jesus is located several kilometers away, near the church in Névez, a community near the town of Pont-Aven.
