Ambroise Vollard was a picture dealer and editor. He posed for four paintings for Renoir. Renoir was already 75 years old when posing for the present painting, in which he is dressed as a matador. He suffered from rheumatism, but he painted with great enthusiasm. Vollard remembers him in his notes while painting outside in nature; he needed help to move, and the brushes were attached to his fingers with strings.
