| Painting style: | Impressionism |

The painting was created in the short time that Renoir had a rented studio in Montmartre. He chose the location because it was near the Moulin de la Galette, where he was painting another scene. The studio in Montmartre had a neglected garden where Renoir painted this oil on canvas with dahlias, for which he used clean, bright patches of pigment. Although the features of the two figures in the background are unclear, the prevailing opinion is that they are Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley.
