The mood in this painting is extremely dreamlike, which the painter achieved through the use of colors and shading, as well as the placement of figures and other components in the painting. The atmosphere in the painting is strange and almost uncomfortable. In the central part of the painting, which is very small compared to the whole scene, the artist has placed a male figure and a jaguar standing on its hind legs and attacking this male figure. Although Rousseau’s paintings are otherwise unrealistic, in the present oil on canvas he created another kind of realism that is almost scary.
