Rousseau loved exploring the Jardin de Plantes in Paris, where he studied the various plants that appear in his paintings. In this picture, too, he used plants for the background, which he enlarged and in this way created the feeling of tropical vegetation. That’s why the plants in this picture look like giant trees and huge flowers that don’t belong in the rainforest.
