The oil on canvas The Bather is one of Cézanne’s more suggestive figure paintings, although the frail body and arms do not belong to any hero, and the rendering is clumsy and imprecise in the traditional 19th century sense. These incongruities can be classed as modern; they point to the fact that despite respecting traditional art, Cézanne depicted the naked man in a way that deviates from classical Renaissance depiction. He strove for art that would follow the pace of time and resist past traditions.
