After returning from Tahiti and selling some of his artwork, Gauguin retreated to Brittany in search of a simpler life and new inspiration. There he began to paint Breton Village in the Snow oil on canvas, and then went to Paris again. It is not known exactly whether Gauguin painted this oil on canvas from memory or during his stay in Brittany during the winter. The oil on canvas Breton Village in the Snow was found on a picture stand in his studio after Gauguin’s death. The painting was not signed and dated, but it is rightly assumed that Gauguin took it with him when he visited Tahiti for the second time.
