Although the oil on canvasIa Orana Maria (We Greet Thee, Mary) is the first example of Christian symbolism in Gauguin’s Tahitian works, the painter was already dealing with this theme before his arrival in Tahiti. Gauguin’s interest in Christianity became evident during the period he spent in Pont-Aven and Brittany between 1889 and 1888.
